In 2025, more than 800,000 P7 pupils sat the Primary Leaving Examination, and over 400,000 students sat the UCE. Behind many of them was someone who patiently explained a sum one more time. That someone could be you. Become a tutor on Superprof and join more than 20 million tutors worldwide, across 2,000+ subjects, teaching what you know on your own terms.
Easier than finding parking in central Kampala. 🚗 Creating your profile takes about five minutes: a clear photo, an honest description of what you teach and your availability. That's all.
Then you choose how you work: online tutoring by video call, with learners in Gulu, Mbarara or anywhere in the world; at home, at your student's home or somewhere quiet and public; one-to-one or in small groups.
Once your ad is live, families looking for a private tutor in Kampala, Jinja, Mukono, Lira and beyond can find you.
Tutoring isn't like most teaching jobs in Uganda: you build the reputation, you set the rate and you draw up the timetable.
Start with your name. Every review a student leaves stays on your profile, and a good reputation brings the next learner to you without any chasing.
Then the income. You set your hourly rate, and tutoring can stay a side income or grow into your main work. Creating your ad costs nothing.
Then the freedom. You decide your days, your hours and your place. Evenings only? Saturdays? Online from home? All fine.
And last, the part that stays with you: watching a learner who dreaded maths walk out of an exam smiling. We never get tired of that. ✨
Absolutely! Students make great tutors for school subjects: you sat the same exams not long ago, you remember what was confusing, and you explain things the way learners understand them.
Homework help, P7 revision for the PLE, maths and sciences for S1 to S4 under the new curriculum: there's plenty of room. Whatever you study, there's a subject where you're stronger than you think.
Moses Okello, a second-year engineering student at Makerere University, tutors two S3 learners in maths and physics on weekday evenings. It covers his transport and data for the month, and his own grades haven't suffered one bit. 📚
Yes, and it's a great way to teach beyond the classroom. One thing to know first: the Ministry of Education and Sports does not allow paid holiday coaching or extra classes during official school breaks, and the National Teachers Act passed in 2026 brings registration and licensing for teachers in schools. If you teach in a school, check how these rules apply to you before taking on paid learners.
On Superprof, you teach with your own methods, at each learner's pace, from P1 to university.
Grace Mugisha taught chemistry for 25 years at a secondary school in Mbarara. Since retiring, she helps S5 and S6 students prepare for UACE chemistry, online, on term-time evenings. It adds a steady monthly income to her pension, and keeps her sharp.
Musicians, coaches, accountants, developers, chefs: your experience is exactly what many learners are looking for. They want someone who uses the skill for real, and that brings students quickly.
Patrick Tumusiime, a software developer in Kampala, started teaching Python online to two university students on Saturday mornings. Six months later, he runs small groups from Kampala to Nairobi. Whatever the level, your skill has an audience.
Think of your ad as a shop's signboard: people decide in seconds whether to walk in. Introduce yourself and your background. Explain how you teach and what a typical lesson looks like. Say when you're available and where you teach. A bright, friendly photo builds trust before the first word. Here's an example:
Hello, I'm Rose Akello, a mathematics graduate from Kyambogo University. I help P6 and P7 pupils prepare for the PLE and support S1 to S4 learners with the new competency-based curriculum, project work included. Each lesson starts with whatever felt hard at school that week and ends with practice questions. I teach in Kampala, at your home or online, on weekday evenings and Saturdays.
Add a short video, then your first reviews as they come in. Will you be the tutor of the year?
More than 2,000, and the list keeps growing. Maths, English, physics, chemistry and biology for exam years. Kiswahili, compulsory in secondary schools, and Ugandan Sign Language. Computer programming, artificial intelligence and accounting for career changers. Singing, bass guitar, chess or martial arts, just for the joy of it. 🌍 Online, you can even teach Luganda to a learner in London without leaving Masaka.
It's a question we hear often. Private tutors usually work as self-employed individuals. The first step is a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) from the Uganda Revenue Authority, which you can get online with your National Identification Number. You then declare your income to URA, whose small-business guidance explains which regime fits your turnover. Teachers in schools also fall under the rules mentioned above.
When it comes to price, set a rate that matches your experience and your area. Many tutors offer the first lesson free, so student and tutor can meet without pressure.
Families in Kampala also find tutors through agencies such as Quality Tutors Uganda or Praecip, and through global websites like Preply. Superprof works differently: your ad is free, your rate is yours, and your profile is visible across Uganda and online.
No two learners are alike. Picture Christine, an S4 candidate in Kampala. The new UCE counts continuous assessment and project work as well as the final exam, so she needs help planning her project as much as revising. Now picture Joseph, a Jinja shopkeeper learning Kiswahili to deal with suppliers from Kenya and Tanzania: he needs short evening lessons built on real conversations. Same tutor, two completely different plans. That's how trust is built.
From Arua to Kabale, someone is ready to learn exactly what you know. Put up your signboard today.
