About Cécile

I am passionate about languages. I love to find connections between words, sentence structures, and cultures. I feel like you can really appreciate and understand a culture by learning the language. The way people express ideas and feelings can be very enlightening to their mindset. I am a native French tutor, certified by Alliance Française, and fluent in English. I have been teaching adults from beginner to advanced levels for 7 years. I am very organized, demanding (I will push for homework) but also chill - I swear! I have learned English, studied some German, Spanish and Portuguese and I am currently learning Japanese as a beginner... so I know exactly what it is like to learn a new language ;) and the methods to reach your language goals!

A great tip for any language learner: the most important thing is to find a way to ENJOY the learning process! That's why it's really important to me to make sure that my lessons are tailored to each student's needs. During a lesson, we study with a combination of conversation, written documents, audio files, and exercises, all linked to grammar structure and composition. Homework can include grammar exercises, French articles, videos, songs... depending on your learning style to make sure you stay engaged and motivated! We see every aspect of the language: grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, expressions, culture, etc... During a free trial lesson (1h), we'll get to know each other a little (your level, your goals...), I'll explain the way I work, test your level, and then we'll start a lesson. If you choose to continue, the next one will be tailor-made from what I have learned about you during the trial lesson. I will send everything by email (pdf, audio files, links...) so no need to buy anything on your end.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I was born and raised in France but my family also has roots in Italy and Portugal!
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Jean Dujardin, a famous French actor, is to me a good representation of French culture and particularly French humour: he is deceptively classy (when really he is super silly).
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

The communication aspect of the French language is defined as "high context", meaning that a lot of contexts is needed in order to properly understand (cf. The Culture Map by Erin Meyer). In other words, in French, we tend to communicate an idea in a nuanced and subtle way. Surprisingly though, we are very direct and clear when it comes to negative feedback! Which might shock other cultures. The explanation behind this behaviour is that culturally we value negative feedback and so there are no hard feelings when we receive some, on the contrary! Understanding this, I think, is one of the most enlightening moments a French learner can experience when interacting with French people.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Most students are interested in learning French because they like the culture (cuisine, wine, artists...). I believe that learning the language is an excellent way to get into the French mindset in order to really appreciate the culture.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

For sure, it's the listening part: we voice half the letters we write, we link words and skip syllables to "ease" the pronunciation... So identifying separate words from a sentence can be a bit difficult at first BUT not impossible! Reading out loud, working on listening exercises, and completing transcriptions or lyrics are some of the tools we can use to get you there!

  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

In High school, I had a lovely English teacher that would use original materials during the class like lyrics from the latest hits. It was a very fun way to memorise vocabulary and work on pronunciation as we were already very familiar with the song but had no clue of the meaning of the lyrics (sometimes outrageous...)!
Since then, I have always found playlists (and karaoke) useful to learn a new language!
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Every trip to a "target language" country is an immersion: from the exposure alone so much can be learned both consciously and unconsciously!
    image.png
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

My passion for it! To me, every language is a form of poetry. I love all the similarities and differences we can find comparing languages: pronunciation, spelling, structure, expressions, and level of communication... There is so much to discover!
I would also add that I am as understanding as I am relentless. 😅
Understanding because your goal is my goal: someone who is not interested in some aspects or subjects will not be pushed if it can be avoided; just as specific passions can be our main focus. Relentless because I will find the best method for each student, I never mind reviewing a concept multiple times if necessary and finding new ways to explain it.
