Acting, for me, is the artistic process of bulding an emotional experience for the viewer/audience through a story line.
My approach to acting is holistic at first and then becomes more specific as the character is developed. I am a heavy believer in “the actors toolbox” where techniques are applied as needed and students and coaches work on finding the approach that suits not only the character/play but are also tailored for the actors personal style.
For example:
A typical coaching of a monologue with me starts like this.
1. Monologue selection
If you don’t already have a piece picked out we will find a monologue that suits your age and look that you emotionally connect with. Something you like.
2. Author/Text
We work out the writing style. Understanding the text and author’s work as a foundation for our own art.
3. Character
We will go over character work using methods from Uta Hagen and Hal Prince. (These are some of my personal favorites for breaking into a monologue.)
4. Audience Perception
The actor decides what else want the character to mean to the audience.
5. Rehearsal
We work the monologue and apply other techniques to “unlock” the character for a performance that leaves the view/audience ideally feeling about the character in the way we intended them to.
:) and then you have a fully built, reliable monologue that is ready for your next audition or taping or showcase. :)
