About Rachel
I have been teaching high school equivalency for 12 years, and I have been informally tutoring middle school and high school level mathematics for much longer than that. On my job, I help students who dropped out of high school (there are many different reasons for this) to earn their diplomas. Though I teach all the high school subjects, math is the one I teach most frequently because it seems to be the one people struggle with more often. I like math, so that's okay! I enjoy helping people have that aha moment when the light bulb comes on.

I tend to use an explicit instruction approach. In this approach, I model the concepts for the learner. Then, we work together to understand the concepts. Finally, the learner will complete items independently to show mastery and understanding.
I try to find and focus on the specific problem areas the learner has. Often, there are only a few lacking concepts that will unlock understanding of the entire subject. I like to find out where the student is struggling and plan my lessons from there.
