About Joy
I was introduced to the game by my uncle when I was a child. From then on, I've been captivated by the two opposing forces. In a game that isn't really about luck, I have found the game very fair. I push accurate speed, sportsmanship and humility at the board, and prefer to play with an attacking, aggressive, tactical style. However, if I see an opening, I will play the long game. I believe in playing with incredibly long foresight and flexibility. While my will to win is high, I don't cheat, encourage or partake in trash talk. I let the pieces speak for themselves- ball don't lie. Nor does your opponent's playing.
Approachable, patient and excited for students' progress, I look forward to tutoring.

I utilize Chess.com. Lessons are mainly for beginners or just someone who needs a partner to play with. I will show the student the board, how to set up pieces and teach a little history of the game. Then, once the basic moves are taught, we will play. After the basic game is understood to a comfortable level, I can teach some introductory tactics. These lessons are good for an introduction to the game, for those reviewing how to play and for those who wonder if the game is right for them.
Chess is excellent for: improving strategy, self-control, decision-making, foresight and focus. Sportsmanship is also important, and handling emotions is also developed here at the board (along with pieces, of course). Endurance and perseverance will be shown during the game. I also tutor in how to learn to play against people- studying their games, using the clock wisely and being a good sport at all times.
Chess can also make great spiritual analogies!
For typing, I've been typing since fifth grade. I usually have at least 80 WPM with 98% accuracy. I am trained on a standard keyboard and my top WPM is 168 with 100% accuracy for that exercise. I utilize Mavis Beacon and Typing.com.

Details
I offer chess lessons for $40 per 1-hr session, or $30 for a 30-minute session. I also offer typing lessons for $40 per 1-hr session, or $30 for a 30-minute session. I do not offer lesson packages or free first lessons; however, please feel free to contact me if you have questions.
Please contact me when convenient, and I can share access to my teaching studio for the relevant subject. Payment for lessons is accepted via Venmo.
I prefer to schedule regular weekly lessons, which allows for consistent progress at my standard rate.
If you would like to schedule lessons week by week instead, please let me know before starting, as last-minute cancellations are charged in full. Flexible lessons are available at a slightly higher rate to account for the extra coordination.
