My students tell me that they enjoy my classes because they always feel like their thoughts and questions are valued. They are impressed that I always make time to ensure they feel confident about their grasp on the material, be it in class or office hours. In reviews, they highlight that as a researcher I could speak from experience and describer what it is like doing the research they learned about in class and could offer them advice on how to make a career out of their personal interests. Students also liked that in every class I brought in a recent news article that highlighted a new finding, diet, or supplement because they enjoyed the feeling of being on the cutting edge of the field. My ability to pay attention to student’s needs, discuss from experience how to take what they are learning beyond the classroom, and focus on integrating real-world examples with theoretical constructs frames my pedagogical approach to teaching.
