About James
I think maths is a thing of great beauty, and find it unfortunate that so many have the opposite experience at school. I hope to change that for a few people. Physics is more obviously fun, but getting one's head round the basic concepts is difficult, and one often needs to see things from a few different perspectives.
I studied at Cambridge, specialising in maths and theoretical physics; I later worked as a senior software engineer, and have now returned to study for a master's in theoretical physics.
Exam technique is mentioned by a lot of parents and students. Practicing exam questions is important, but focusing exclusively on it can suck the motivation out of students. I find it's better to start with how to communicate and justify one's ideas, in both speaking and writing. This naturally leads to clearer exam answers.
I am prepared to help all levels of students make progress, whether already high-performing or struggling.
Related experience includes:

I mostly teach online - for students in commuting distance from Leeds I can do occasional in-person tutorials / parent chats.
The free sample tutorial would start with a discussion of the student's current position and goals; we would then look at some material brought by the student, sent before the lesson if possible. This could be notes from class, exercises or an exam question.
It's important for me to understand how my students think, so I can tailor my explanations. I try to ensure the student is contributing as many ideas as possible, and adjust the pace of the lesson if they're getting lost or bored.
Intuition is important in maths. Too often it can seem like a lot of arbitrary nonsense, with no purpose. My job is to present things in a new way and build on any intuition the student already has, pointing out links between topics that don't seem related on the surface. I will also point out real-world applications, to make it clear why we're studying things.

Perfect! Would highly recommend James as a A Level Math's and Physics tutor. He explains concepts clearly, and has made difficult topics much easier for my son to understand. My son's grades have improved while being tutored by James. James is easy to communicate with and book appointments both in person and online.

James has helped me understand an uncountable number of ideas in maths and physics over the years. His deep understanding of the subject is reflected in his ability to make concepts accessible and reframe them in multiple ways. Coupled with his enthusiasm for sharing his interest makes him an excellent and engaging teacher. He is patient and friendly, and I couldn't recommend him more.
James helped me to understand many complex topics which allowed me to enjoy areas of Maths that I previously didn't. He is very thorough and great at giving different ways to think about the content
James' teaching is clear and concise, and succeeds in breaking down complex concepts in a way that makes them simple and straightforward to understand. Would highly recommend.
A clear, kind, and patient explainer of complicated topics, notably maths, physics, computer science, and music. Incredibly knowledgeable and able to break down technical points into manageable chunks.
