About Al
Al Dettmann (they/them) is a queer fibers artist focusing on mixed-media & fine art practices. Growing up in Maine, they have always been a creative spirit who loves exploring the natural environment and connecting with communities around the world. Earning their BFA in Fibers from Savannah College of Art and Design, they hope to share their love of color, hand-painted textures, and patchwork surfaces. Based in Brooklyn, NY, they are on their latest adventure, growing their studio practice while collaborating with communities of creatives. With all of their work, their greatest passion is to uplift voices through art & design and constantly create wonders that inspire all of us to live our messy lives beautifully, boldly, and authentically.

I am an art educator with over 6 years of teaching experience facilitating textile practices to children and adults ages 4+. My creative practice goes hand in hand with my teaching practice. Both processes inform one another. My teaching approach is centered around creating out of curiosity and experimentation. I like to challenge those who say they “aren’t artistic” to let go of their perceptions of “good” and “bad” and create from a place of deep connection and feeling. Students will learn technical-based textile practices while creating from a non-judgmental and supportive place. Students in the past have beamed about my classes being filled with knowledge, fun, and a level of peace.
