About Maegan
ASL is my passion and my favorite thing is to help build bridges between the Deaf and hearing worlds. My passion for ASL started when I was a little girl. I was born to Deaf parents, (I’m a CODA!) and have been signing almost every day of my life. I joined the professional world of interpreting as soon as I was old enough to. (And a little bit before that!) I am currently an experienced ASL interpreter with over 7 years of professional work under my belt. I have worked in a variety of settings including: family environments, conferences, employment, religious settings, concerts, educational, community, remote video, etc. Besides interpreting, I have professionally taught ASL for 3 years, although I have casually taught on and off through the years. My favorite student thus far has been my husband. When we met he had never even met a deaf person. Over the past 7 years, I have made him a fluent signer! In this case, I had the unique opportunity to tutor someone on a daily basis and see weak areas, what needed to be explained, what worked and what didn’t.

When I take on a new student, I like to take part of the first lesson to get to know them and ask some questions on what they know and their desire to learn. This helps me adjust my goals to line up with theirs. It is important to me to clearly understand my student’s goals and expectations, which allows me to prepare our time together in the most beneficial way. I am prepared with a syllabus, but with the goal to cater to the learning style of my students. I am flexible and willing to adjust in whatever way necessary to meet your goal. I have a lot to offer, especially for beginners. Lessons may include, but are not limited to: vocabulary, hand shapes, facial expressions, deaf culture, sentence structure practice, vocab mnemonics to help remember signs, and so much more. I am also open to using learning methods students suggest for themselves. I have experience tutoring one on one as well as teaching in a classroom setting.
My lessons do vary depending on the student I am working with. I will always share information on Deaf culture—as this is crucial to becoming fluent. If you are independently studying ASL, I can help set up a plan for us to follow along together to learn and finesse vocabulary, grammar, clarity, and conversational skills. If you are already taking a class, I can explain things you may be struggling to understand and can help you practice for upcoming presentations or tests.
I believe the best way to learn is by immersion. And the best way to do this while learning ASL is to ‘turn your voice off’ and remove the ‘crutch’ of our ears and voices. You will learn much better this way. The way to growth is outside the comfort zone! During our meetings, I will suggest we put ourselves on mute, so you can have a true immersion experience. (This may vary on the student’s level and comfort—but is highly suggested!) My greatest joy is sharing what I know to those with a desire to learn. ASL is such a unique language with so much knowledge, joy, and opportunities to offer. It is a privilege to have in your toolbelt, and I would love to be the one to help you get exactly where you want to go! I look forward to interacting with you to share my expertise and answer any questions you may have.
