About Maya
I recently graduated from Rice University with a degree in Business Finance and a minor in Entrepreneurship. During my time in college, I developed a strong analytical foundation and a structured approach to problem-solving, which I now bring into my tutoring.
I have prior experience working with students both in-person at Kumon in Paramus and online through a volunteer tutoring organization called Million Reasons. These experiences helped me learn how to adapt my teaching style to different learning needs, whether a student benefits from step-by-step guidance, extra repetition, or alternative explanations. I have also been a camp counselor multiple times and I am passionate about working with and teaching kids.
In terms of academic background, I have studied advanced mathematics including Linear Algebra and Differential Equations, which has given me a strong grasp of mathematical thinking and logic. This allows me to confidently teach subjects such as Algebra, Pre-Algebra, and elementary math while breaking down complex ideas into clear, understandable steps.

My teaching approach is relaxed, patient, and personalized to each student. I focus on making math feel less intimidating by breaking concepts into simple, manageable steps and encouraging students to ask questions comfortably. I believe students learn best when they understand why something works rather than just memorizing formulas.
A typical lesson starts with reviewing any homework questions or topics the student is struggling with. Then, I explain the concept step-by-step, work through practice problems together, and gradually let the student solve problems independently while I guide them when needed. I also adapt lessons based on the student’s pace and learning style. I like to demonstrate with games to make for a more fun, engaging session and repeat problems until the student understands the concept.
I try my best to create a low-pressure environment where students can build confidence without feeling judged. I aim to make lessons interactive, supportive, and easy to follow, especially for students who may feel anxious or frustrated with math.
My lessons are for pre-elementary, elementary, middle school, and high school students, including those taking elementary arithmetic, pre-algebra, and algebra courses. I especially enjoy helping students who want extra support, need help catching up in class, or want to strengthen their math foundations.
