About Melina Elizabeth
Hi, I'm Melina! I'm a native English speaker currently based in London, completing a Master's in International Business. My path here has been a bit unusual, I've worked in fashion retail, run my own food business, trained in French pastry in Paris and Versailles, and spent years training and mentoring new team members across very different industries. What ties all of that together is something I care about a lot: explaining things clearly and patiently, in a way that actually makes sense to the person in front of me.
I have tried to learn French myself, so I know firsthand what it feels like to sit on the other side of the table as a language learner, the nerves, the small wins, the moments things finally click. I bring that same patience and encouragement into every lesson I teach.
Outside of tutoring, I volunteer with children, work for animal welfare and I play competitive badminton, which has taught me a fair bit about staying calm and focused under pressure, something that helps just as much in a classroom as it does on a court.
I'd love to help you build your confidence in English, one conversation at a time.

I focus on conversation first, correction second. Most learners freeze up when every sentence gets interrupted for a grammar fix, so I let a student get their point across fully, then go back and work on the two or three things that would make the biggest difference, rather than every small error at once. I tailor this depending on the person: someone learning for work or an exam needs more structure and repetition on specific patterns, while someone learning for general fluency or confidence needs more free conversation with light correction woven in.
Techniques and methodology:
I use a mix of guided conversation, real-world scenarios (ordering at a restaurant, writing an email, describing your day), and short, focused drills on whatever a student is consistently getting wrong. I also lean on my own experience training new team members across several jobs, breaking a skill into small steps, showing it, then having the person practise it immediately rather than just explaining it, which works the same way for language as it does for any other skill.
Typical lesson length:
I'd typically run 45 to 60 minute lessons. Long enough to genuinely build momentum in a conversation, short enough that a beginner or younger learner doesn't lose focus.
Qualifications and experience:
I'm a native English speaker with a background that's given me a lot of practice explaining things clearly to people from different backgrounds, training and onboarding new staff in several jobs, mentoring first-time entrepreneurs on business fundamentals, and volunteering directly with children, including some with additional learning needs. I don't currently hold a formal TEFL or CELTA certificate, but I'm comfortable being upfront about that and happy to pursue one if it's something the role would value.
Who the lessons are for:
I'd be comfortable teaching conversational and general English across a range of levels, from upper beginner through advanced, and with both teenagers and adults. Given my own background moving across countries and languages for work and study, I especially enjoy working with adult learners who need English for a specific goal, work, study, or an exam, since I understand what that pressure feels like firsthand.
