About Nessa
Hi! I’m Nessa, an educator and writer with an MA in English and a strong background in teaching, academic writing, and critical analysis. I recently completed my graduate studies at the University of Colorado Boulder, where I focused on rhetoric, literary analysis, communication, and writing. I also earned my undergraduate degree from Xavier University, an experience that helped shape both my academic interests and my approach to mentorship and learning.
I am passionate about helping students build confidence in their abilities while developing the skills they need to succeed both inside and outside the classroom. Through university teaching, tutoring, and one-on-one academic support, I have worked with students across multiple age groups and skill levels. These experiences taught me how important it is to create a learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and growing intellectually.
I believe strong teaching is about more than improving grades. It is about helping students become more confident thinkers, readers, and communicators. Whether a student needs help understanding a difficult text, organizing an essay, improving grammar, preparing for exams, or building overall academic confidence, I work to make lessons supportive, engaging, and tailored to their individual needs.
Students often describe me as patient, encouraging, and approachable while still maintaining high academic standards. I aim to make learning feel rewarding rather than intimidating, and I enjoy helping students discover that they are often more capable than they initially believe.
I especially enjoy working with students in English, writing, literature, rhetoric, and reading comprehension, but I also help students strengthen broader skills like critical thinking, organization, and academic confidence.

My approach to tutoring is centered on curiosity, confidence-building, and helping students genuinely understand material rather than simply memorizing it. I believe students learn best when they feel comfortable asking questions, thinking critically, and engaging with ideas in a meaningful way. As someone with an MA in English and extensive teaching experience at the university level, I aim to create lessons that are both intellectually engaging and approachable.
My teaching style is adaptive and student-centered. Every student learns differently, so I tailor lessons to individual goals, learning styles, and areas of difficulty. I focus heavily on discussion, guided practice, and breaking down complex concepts into manageable steps. Rather than simply giving answers, I help students develop the analytical and problem-solving skills needed to succeed independently.
A typical lesson begins with identifying the student’s goals for the session and reviewing any questions or challenges they are currently facing. From there, we work through concepts together using examples, collaborative discussion, practice exercises, and targeted feedback. I also incorporate strategies for organization, writing structure, reading comprehension, and critical thinking so students build long-term academic skills alongside immediate subject knowledge.
What sets me apart as a tutor is my combination of academic expertise, teaching experience, and ability to make students feel supported without lowering expectations. I have experience teaching and mentoring students across a range of levels, including elementary school, middle school, high school, undergraduate, and adult learners. My background in rhetoric, literary analysis, and academic writing allows me to help students not only improve grades but also become stronger communicators and more confident thinkers.
