About Simon

I have a Queensland University Diploma of Education for English Language Arts & History, a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities and I am certified to teach the International Baccalaureate (IB) English A: Language & Literature programme, the Advanced Placement (AP) English Language & Composition and the English Literature & Composition programmes. In June 2014, I also participated in a Category 3 IB workshop for Theory of Knowledge. There are also numerous workshops that such as 21st Century Learning, Understanding by Design, Differentiation in the Classroom, 6 traits + 1 Assessment, ESL in the Mainstream and regular in-service collaboration with colleagues from all grade levels. My most recent posting was at Pan-Asia International School as Department Head for High School and Middle School English. In addition to this, I was appointed as Assistant Curriculum Coordinator due to my experience. When I arrived, PAIS was seeking accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and from the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). This involved facilitating various committees necessary for accreditation. Then, in cooperation with the IT department, I designed and installed a rudimentary curriculum database via GOOGLE drive for the school. Before Pan Asia, I worked at Ruamrudee International School for 15 years in the High School English department where I specialised in teaching International Baccalaureate (IB) English and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. During that time, I also taught summer school classes to Middle School students every year from 1999 to 2010. Before moving to the High School, I taught science and values in the Elementary section of Ruamrudee for a year to students from grades 1 through 5. Aside from teaching, I regularly participated in various school improvement councils, teacher representative committees and school health and safety committees and I also coached the girls' touch rugby team. In addition to the qualifications listed on my cv, I have benefited from a regular in-service regimen which has been ongoing since I began my international career. Not to mention the invaluable advice shared between colleagues the majority of whom gladly sacrificed their time and energy to ensure that I was able to confidently perform each role throughout my career. Either through formal mentoring in the classroom or casual conversations over lunch, the most invaluable advice has come directly from working with colleagues and to whom I am profoundly grateful.

My goal in teaching is to offer a multicultural perspective on current curriculum and also to foster long-term skills for life after school. I immediately establish a sense of comfort and intellectual freedom in my classroom but maintain high expectations from students by continually challenging students with problems that require critical thinking and teamwork. These learning experiences endow them with the ability to harvest quality data with a discerning eye from a wide range of sources and to enable them to communicate effectively in different narrative genres. Most importantly, my role is to praise, praise, praise students their first few uncertain steps towards reading and writing proficiency. Then to set them on a path of self-education which will ultimately last for the duration of their professional lives. I too am a life-long learner, committed to ongoing professional development to ensure that students gain the most from my teaching.
