About Steven
My teaching philosophy is grounded in the principles of inclusivity and equity. I firmly believe that every student deserves an equal opportunity to learn and thrive in the classroom. As an educator, it is my responsibility to create a safe and inclusive learning environment that values and celebrates diversity.
Inclusive teaching means embracing and accommodating students of diverse backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles. By recognizing and responding to students’ individual needs, I strive to create an atmosphere in which everyone feels welcomed and respected. I believe in employing diverse teaching methods and materials so that students can engage with course content in ways that resonate with their individual experiences and learning preferences. By promoting student voice and choice, I aim to foster a sense of ownership and empowerment in the learning process.
Equity is another fundamental aspect of my teaching philosophy. I believe that no student should be disadvantaged because of their circumstances. It is imperative to provide equitable resources and opportunities to all learners, ensuring that they have the tools they need to succeed. I am committed to recognizing and addressing biases and inequalities that may exist in the classroom and to actively working toward dismantling systemic barriers to learning.
Through inclusive and equitable teaching practices, I strive to create a supportive environment in which students are encouraged to explore, question, and grow. I believe that education is a transformative process and that, by prioritizing inclusivity and equity, I can help students develop the confidence and intellectual independence necessary to shape their futures.

I hold a Master of Arts degree in English Literature from the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO) and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from St. Mary’s University. My scholarly work focuses on contemporary climate fiction, with particular attention to its impact on ethical perspectives concerning non-human animal rights and climate change. I also investigate how psychological perspectives, specifically attribution theory, operate within narratives of climate change. In my thesis, I examine the perceived opposition and tension between religion and science. More broadly, my research is grounded in literary theory, with a particular interest in the methodologies employed by literary theorists, especially Derridean philosophy and deconstruction. My academic interests include, but are not limited to, American literature, Victorian literature, Gothic literature, twentieth-century poetry, and American popular culture. I have also studied Old English, Middle English, Latin, and linguistics.
I have experience teaching both small classes and large lecture courses. As a Teaching Assistant at UBC Okanagan, I taught English 253: Readings in the Anthropocene, working with approximately 90 students per semester. My responsibilities included preparing weekly lectures, holding office hours, evaluating assignments and tests, and uploading grades. I also had the opportunity to lecture to a cohort of approximately 500 students, design course materials, and develop essay questions for examinations and writing assignments. During my graduate studies, I presented my research at the American Literature Association’s annual conference and at the ACCUTE Congress in 2018, where I discussed Jack Kerouac’s Desolation Angels and its deconstructionist characteristics. I am confident in my ability to teach a diverse range of undergraduate courses, including English, Canadian, and American literature, as well as genre-specific courses such as Gothic literature and climate fiction.
I also have experience teaching in an English-as-a-second-language environment. As a Literacy Leader with the non-profit organization NITEO, which focuses on promoting literacy and supporting libraries in Africa, I worked closely with immigrant families by facilitating weekly reading clubs and encouraging children to engage with literature. This role strengthened my ability to foster a love of reading while responding to students’ diverse learning needs.
