About Roland
Hello, my name is Roland Blake. I am a graduate of the University of Chicago, where I studied Anthropology and Data Science. I obtained my bachelor’s degree cum laude with departmental honors and received the prestigious Lichtstern Prize in Cultural Anthropology for my thesis. Most of my writing tutoring experience comes from assisting high school students with college essay writing, but I also served as a peer mentor for two years to incoming students at the University of Chicago, and have worked with many of my fellow college students on their argumentative essays. I have also worked as a curatorial assistant for several non-profit organizations, a researcher for a post-doctoral scholar, and an administrator in two academic departments. These roles have given me extensive experience engaging with a wide range of writing styles, and given me a deep appreciation for the power of mentorship. Whatever project you're working on, I look forward to supporting you as you grow as a writer.

In my experience, most great writers share three key qualities. The first is a critical eye that can spot issues and guide revision. The second is a strong authorial voice, which is compelling and clear. The third, and perhaps most important, is an understanding of the point behind their writing and the structure used to achieve it. My approach as a writing tutor is to help my students develop these qualities through research, practice, and personalized guidance. I structure my sessions around students’ upcoming assignments, college essays, or passion projects, keeping our work grounded in the interests of the student themselves. When students examine their own work or work that excites them, they remain much more engaged and motivated, and learn far more than from any rote exercise. Therefore, each of my lessons is different, and tailored to the needs of the students at the time. Most of my tutoring experience is with high school students working on their college essays, and with college students writing academic papers for the first time. However, I am comfortable working with writers at a wide range of levels, and working on many types of projects. Teaching is a great passion of mine, and nothing makes me happier than seeing students succeed and grow as writers, developing their critical eye, authorial voice, and organized intention.

Roland was amazing. He was helping me revise my college essays. He put a lot of effort into knowing me personally and using that knowledge to make my writing more personal and engaging. Most importantly, Roland really cared about my college process, constantly empathizing with my stress and making me feel confident in my writing and overall application. Overall, I believe he would be a fantastic teacher for any young student.
Roland helped me shape my college essays into work I’m immensely proud of! He is an excellent tutor who knows how to pull out great moments in your writing!
