About Jillian
I am a passionate and experienced tutor with a strong academic background and a genuine love for helping students learn, grow, and gain confidence in their abilities. I graduated from Colgate University, where I double majored in History and Educational Studies, earning honors in both fields. I also completed a high honors thesis in History and an honors thesis in Educational Studies. I went on to earn my Juris Doctor from the University of San Diego School of Law, where I further developed my expertise in research, analytical reasoning, and persuasive writing.
Throughout my four years at Colgate, I worked as a tutor at the university's Writing and Speaking Center, helping students strengthen their writing, communication, and critical thinking skills. I worked with students from diverse academic and linguistic backgrounds, including international students learning English and students preparing graduate school application essays. I also have experience working with elementary school students, including first graders learning to read and fourth graders struggling with reading comprehension.
My educational background has given me a deep appreciation for the different ways students learn. I understand that academic challenges can sometimes feel overwhelming, and I strive to make every tutoring session a positive, supportive, and productive experience. I pride myself on being patient, approachable, and attentive to each student's individual needs.
What I enjoy most about tutoring is watching students become more confident in their abilities. Whether I am helping a young student discover a love for reading, guiding a high school student through a challenging essay, or supporting a college student with advanced academic writing, I find it incredibly rewarding to help students achieve their goals.
I believe that every student has the potential to succeed with the right guidance, encouragement, and individualized support. My goal is not simply to help students improve their grades, but to inspire curiosity, foster independence, and develop skills that will benefit them throughout their academic and professional lives.

I believe that effective tutoring goes beyond helping students complete assignments. It is about building confidence, strengthening critical thinking skills, and developing the tools necessary to succeed independently. My approach is personalized, encouraging, and collaborative. I recognize that every student learns differently, and I tailor my teaching methods to each student's individual strengths, challenges, and academic goals.
I graduated from Colgate University with a double major in History and Educational Studies, earning honors in both disciplines, and went on to earn my Juris Doctor from the University of San Diego School of Law. Throughout my four years at Colgate, I worked as a tutor at the Writing and Speaking Center, helping students develop their writing, analytical reasoning, and communication skills. I have worked with students at a wide range of academic levels, from elementary school children learning to read to college students developing sophisticated research papers and graduate school application essays.
**My Teaching Methods**
My tutoring sessions emphasize active participation, thoughtful discussion, and individualized instruction. Rather than simply providing answers or correcting mistakes, I guide students through the reasoning process so they understand how to approach similar challenges independently. I use guided questions, brainstorming exercises, close reading, writing practice, and constructive feedback to help students strengthen their skills.
I also prioritize creating a welcoming environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, expressing ideas, and making mistakes. I believe that confidence is essential to academic success, particularly for students who struggle with reading or writing.
**A Typical Lesson**
Each lesson begins with a brief conversation about the student's goals, current assignments, and areas of difficulty. From there, we work collaboratively on targeted skills, whether that involves reading comprehension, essay organization, thesis development, grammar, research, or analytical writing.
For younger students, sessions may include engaging reading exercises, comprehension discussions, vocabulary development, and creative writing activities. For older students, lessons may focus on constructing persuasive arguments, evaluating evidence, organizing complex ideas, or revising essays.
I conclude sessions by reviewing what we have accomplished, answering remaining questions, and identifying specific strategies the student can apply independently.
**What Sets Me Apart**
My background in both education and law provides me with a unique perspective on teaching reading, writing, and critical thinking. My undergraduate studies in Educational Studies gave me a strong foundation in understanding how students learn, while my extensive academic writing experience, including completing honors-level research and legal writing, allows me to help students develop increasingly sophisticated communication skills.
Most importantly, I genuinely love tutoring and helping students discover their abilities. I find it especially rewarding to work with students who initially lack confidence and help them recognize their own progress.
**Who I Tutor**
I welcome students of all ages and academic backgrounds, including elementary, middle school, high school, college, and graduate students. My areas of expertise include reading comprehension, English language arts, essay writing, academic and research writing, college application essays, graduate school admissions essays, legal writing, and general writing development.
Whether a student needs foundational support, help with a challenging assignment, or guidance refining advanced writing skills, my goal is to make learning engaging, approachable, and rewarding.
