My approach places a strong emphasis on each student's unique requirements as well as their academic performance. Some people might need to focus more on theory, while others might only need to address practical issues. Generally speaking, though, I try to empathise a lot with the learner and take a very practical rather than theoretical approach. It doesn't matter if something needs to be said a hundred times to be comprehended; what matters is that the pupil knows what they are doing.
