About Ivory

Hello, I’m Ivory, and I’m a native Mandarin speaker from Guangdong. I moved to Canada when I was 15, so I am a fluent speaker of both English and Mandarin. I am passionate about helping students master Mandarin with confidence and enthusiasm! As a dedicated tutor and a fourth-year student at SFU’s Beedie School of Business, I bring professionalism, patience, flexibility, and a personalized approach to every lesson. With years of academic success and a deep understanding of the challenges learners face, I create a supportive environment where students feel encouraged to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. My methodology combines interactive activities, cultural insights, and real-world applications to ensure each lesson is both engaging and effective. Whether you’re a beginner starting your Mandarin journey, a professional aiming to enhance your skills for business, or a student preparing for exams, I’m here to guide you every step of the way. What sets me apart is my ability to adapt to different learning styles and my commitment to helping each student achieve their unique goals. Together, we’ll build a solid foundation and unlock your full potential in Mandarin. Let’s embark on this exciting journey of learning and discovery!

About the lesson

I use a blended approach, combining traditional teaching methods with modern, interactive tools. This includes: - Customized Lesson Plans: Tailored to each student's goals, whether it's improving conversational skills, mastering grammar, or preparing for exams. - Engaging Activities: Role-playing, storytelling, and multimedia resources like videos and songs to make learning fun and immersive. - Repetition and Reinforcement: Frequent reviews to ensure retention and understanding of key concepts. - Cultural Insights: Incorporating Chinese history, idioms, and traditions to provide a deeper connection to the language. A Typical Lesson Plan - Warm-up (5-10 minutes): Review of the previous lesson and light conversational practice. - Core Lesson (30-40 minutes): Focus on specific topics such as vocabulary, grammar, or pronunciation, using examples and exercises. - Interactive Practice (15-20 minutes): Role-playing or discussing a short article to apply new concepts. - Wrap-up (5-10 minutes): Summarize key takeaways and assign optional practice work to reinforce learning. What Sets Me Apart - Excellent and authentic Chinese speaking skills and access to unique Chinese reading materials. - Patient and Adaptable: I adjust my teaching pace and style to match each student’s learning preferences. - Business Background: As a third-year SFU Beedie School of Business student, I bring practical insights for students learning Mandarin for business or professional purposes. - Comprehensive Approach: I balance language mechanics with cultural understanding, ensuring students gain confidence in real-world communication. My lessons are ideal for: - Beginners, intermediate, or advanced learners looking to improve their Mandarin. - Students preparing for academic exams or certifications. - Professionals needing Mandarin for business or travel. Anyone interested in exploring Chinese language and culture.
