About Steve

At present I am employed part time teaching evening classes as an ELICOS teacher. I am also registered as a casual relief primary teacher for TRACER and my Queensland College of Teachers registration number is 770087. I have a Diploma of Teaching, Bachelor of Arts degree in Education and Psychology and Certificate in TESOL (Trinity College London).

As my curriculum vitae will highlight, I have worked as an English teacher in China, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand. My experience as a classroom teacher extends more than 14 years and during this time I have developed a variety of teaching strategies and leadership skills to cater for multiple age and ethnic groups of students with diverse educational and cultural needs. My strengths include, but are not limited to, primary classroom teaching in all curriculum areas, pastoral care and school council leadership, developing learning programs to cater for students’ individual needs and sports coaching, refereeing and coordination.

As a teacher I would aspire to bring to your school a wealth of teaching and educational experience with sound curriculum knowledge. I would also continue to adapt and complement present school education policies and English programs to enhance student progress and learning using a variety of innovative strategies and technologies.

I believe students learn best when they are actively involved in the learning process. I try to engage students in learning by using diverse teaching methods and technologies catering for multiple-intelligences. The more ways students process information, the more likely they will be able to apply, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate the learning material including what they have learnt.
As a teacher I prefer to use differentiation and grouping to cater for the individual needs of students with mixed abilities. Differentiation requires a variety of teaching strategies that potentially keep all students engaged in the learning process. Students also become more engaged when they see the relevance of their learning compared to real life experiences. It is important for students to think about information in a variety of ways, including thinking about how learning is relevant to what they already know. Students become more motivated to learn when they see how material can be used to understand themselves and explain real life situations. This can bring leaning alive and increase students’ motivation to learn new material.
An enthusiastic environment also facilitates engagement. One way to develop students’ enthusiasm in the learning process is for the teacher to convey enthusiasm for the subject matter. Enthusiasm is contagious and by demonstrating a real passion for learning different subjects, students likewise become more engaged and interested as well.
The relationship between educators and students is the key to good teaching. It is important to convey a real interest in students as individuals using a holistic approach by genuinely caring for others and the environment, love and respect, hard work and integrity, charity and global awareness. Teachers must try to convey this by creating a classroom environment characterized by knowledge of students as individuals, mutual respect, and enthusiasm for learning. I believe this multi-disciplined approach aims to empower students to become resourceful, productive, global citizens in the future, which best reflects my teaching philosophy.
