About Mackenzie

Hi! My name is Mackenzie and I am an undergraduate student at the Northeast's number one public university. My previous experience teaching includes working with children ages 3-7 on the fundamentals of dance as well as a private tutoring and enrichment experience with a student preparing for the SHSAT exam. My personal academic standing is a 4.0 gpa and I have prepared for most standardized tests including the NY State Tests, NY Regents Exams, the PSAT, the CHSEE Exam, and the ACT. I have also taken and excelled in 7+ AP exams including subjects such as music, calculus, foreign language, history, science, and psychology. I enjoy working with children and helping them to achieve the full capacity of their academic potential, manage their assignments and build healthy study habits, as well as find confidence in themselves and their academic ability.

My first time ever teaching was at a dance studio where I had been a former student. I think that in order to be a good teacher you also have to remember what it was like to be a student which was something that I had the unique experience of doing there. My first academic teaching position was a volunteer opportunity to help 8th grade students involved in a summer enrichment program prepare to take a high school entrance exam (SHSAT) where I built relationships with students, helped them manage their academic workload, and went over exam content as well as test taking strategies.

About the lesson

Usually when I begin to work with a student we start off with an ice breaker situation to get to know one another. I think that it is very important to build a comfortable relationship with the student in order for them to be receptive to any information being taught to them. I also explain that they have the control within our session to decide what it is they need help with and what they want to focus on because I think the ability to identify problem areas and ask for help is a huge part of building the ability to improve.
