About Robert
I am a credentialed drama teacher with a K-12 supplemental theater arts/drama credential from the California commission of teacher credentialing, attzched yo my K-8 Clear Multiple Subject credential. I have extensive acting trainer, community theater, and college level theater experience, as well as a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree from Pacific Lutheran University in Washington state, where my focus was children’s theater, Acting/directing, and technical theatre. Guiding students through the many facets of the acting discipline is a passion of mine. The practice both creates a fun outlet for the energetic child, and offers a unique strategy-based outlet for those that seek to learn a craft that guides identity, and imaginative exploration.
I began my career as an actor in high school, and once I found acting to be a passion that has guided me through many life stages and events, I further pursued it at the college and community theatre, even as a volunteer and community service level. Through these experiences I found that I had a knack for communicating to others different portions, and avenues through which others approached and learned theatre and acting. This became, naturally, a perspective that maybe helped me pursue teaching as a career choice. 21 years later, I’m all the better for it.
As stated prior I have a bachelor of fine arts (BFA) in acting and directing from Pacific Lutheran University In Washington state. I also have a credential from the California commission of teacher credentialing. I have 15 years of teacher preparation, at undergrad, and graduate levels. This professorial experience has been at a regionally accredited university, and the coursework has been focused on Arts integration, survey of the Arts, and Arts history periods and methodology. Teaching teachers, through my university experience, and my current professional development series around the National Core Arts Standards which have recently been adapted to become California’s new arts standards. I have recently been solicited to join a CSET Subject Matter Advisory Panel regarding the new theatre arts credential.

I like to just talk to students and see what they hope to get out of any acting lessons that they may be seeking. What is their motivation for learning the craft? What created in them, and interested them in going into this area of acting? From that conversation, I liked to explore how they can better communicate with others, by using some skills embedded in the acting process. Speaking skills, confidence, effective communication strategies, focus, emotional appeal, etc, are some great examples I like to explore.
I have worked with students from the pre-K through adulthood. I have been both of University professor of acting and theatrical skills, as well as working on all aspects of acting and production at the pre-K through eighth grade levels. I actually did my student teaching at the high school level where I helped create an outstanding program, culminating with a production of “The Pirates of Penzance” at the high school level.
I would ask the teacher not just what experience they have in the acting realm, but what purpose does the craft of acting help them pursue professionally and personally? I think that would be very telling for many teachers. I would also ask them why they teach... And then listen carefully to their answer.
I really enjoyed going to musical and theatrical shows. I like to watch the entertainment value that is exhibited, or sometimes not, by the many acts and actors that I go to see. Seeing how they interact with, and create, or at least seek to create, a rapport with their audience is ever so exciting and telling! It inspires and drives me to further my craft.

Details
I currently charge $40 an hour, which is slightly less than my training hourly rate as a public school teacher, and substantially less than my university hourly rate. I have to walk the fine line of being a multiple degree-holding professional, and a sensible service provider to my students.
