About Mariana

I naturally tutored my peers in my courses throughout my high school and college career. In the last year, I began tutoring for the chemistry department at Virginia Tech.

In high school, I completed many hours of tutoring through the NHS organization.

Now in college, I am a General Chemistry 1035 and 1036 Teacher's Assistant. I hold two weekly office hours where I tutor students for free!

I enjoy meeting at a location the student is familiar with. This location may be a relaxing cafe, a local library, or a garden with a picnic table. Scenery is important for strengthening focus and associating studying with an enjoyable environment.

I prefer to communicate via text and email.

Punctuality is also very important! A student is not just showing up for the tutor but showing up for themselves. Arriving 10 minutes early allows the student to have enough time to learn and not feel rushed during the tutoring session.

I have worked with high school and college students.

My advice for a student looking to hire a teach in my area of expertise is to understand that science is complicated. Science may seem objective but it is more subjective than most people think. The way I perceive thermodynamics can be completely different from the way a physicist perceives it. Biologists and Chemists have different ways to describe and teach the same concept. A small example of different perspectives is the way "ligand" is pronounced. Chemists say "lih-ghind" while Biologists say "lie-gand." It may take a while for a student to click with a tutor.

There are many more ways than one to explain and understand a concept and it is important to have patience with yourself as you try to find someone who explains it the way your mind is meant to understand it.

Alongside my academic career, I am also an artist and a dancer. I write and produce music with my piano as my companion, and I dance on the DOP dance team at Virginia Tech. I am also an executive board member of the DOP dance team.

The event I am describing is my second year of college. I have learned time management and have begun to learn the balance between passions and academics. My second year of college has been a learning experience that I feel I will always be fond of.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I believe that students should ask tutors what their teaching style is. Some tutors ask more questions than hand out explanation, and vice versa. Other tutors may have the student work out the problem before giving the student peace of mind by providing the answer. Some students prefer to watch the tutor work a problem first before making their own attempt. Communication is vital in a tutoring session.
