About Richard
Howdy! My name is Richard, and I am a MD/MPH student; I'm currently on a break from schooling and tutoring in my free time.
I double majored in Biochemistry and Sociology at Texas A&M University in College Station, so I have plenty of expertise in those two particular fields. I have also underwent two years of medical and public health education, so I have a wide breadth of knowledge regarding anatomy, physiology, epidemiology, biostatistics, social and psychological sciences, genetics, pharmacology, medical biochemistry, etc.
If you need advice and feedback regarding your medical school application, I can also provide my perspective as a service as well, especially with preparation and identifying which areas in your application may be the weakest.
I have experience tutoring peers and underclassmen in both a 1-on-1 setting as well as small group settings for the sciences in both college and medical school. In particular, the subjects I tutored include introductory biology, upper-level biology, medical biochemistry, sociology courses, and others. I have the most experience tutoring adult learners, but I am very open to learners of all ages. Back in high school, I tutored math for middle schoolers on Saturdays through a student organization called NHS (National Honor Society).
I am much less experienced in writing than compared to the sciences, but I am continually improving myself in the field of writing every single day. Writing is a passion of mine, and I love helping others improve their own writing as I find it very rewarding. I have a year of solid online writing experience outside of academia and have edited and proofread friends' screenplays, chapters, and essays.
To improve myself and my tutoring approach for younger learners, I took an online course titled, ‘Foundations of Teaching for Learning’, a fantastic course provided by the Commonwealth Education Trust. Not only is the course taught by Dr. John MacBeath, Professor Emeritus at Cambridge University, UK, the class covers teaching thinking and learning skills, the dimensions of childhood that affect learning, strategies to improve student learning, among other practical teaching tools.
Please feel free to message me (concealed information) if you have any particular questions or if you would like to book a session. I am very flexible, respond promptly, and I'd like to accommodate my tutoring to meet your or your child’s specific needs and goals, whether that be preparing for a midterm exam or helping your child succeed in Algebra. Looking forward to seeing you!
My tutoring approach includes creation of a lesson plan but keeping it flexible enough to be able to tailor it to individual students as I know each student is different and everyone learns best differently. For some of my younger students, it’s not just about the content but about motivating students to LIKE and appreciate learning to set them up for success later on in life. For adult learners, I also start with a lesson plan, but I like to begin with identifying knowledge gaps, so that I may gear my tutoring sessions towards filling in those gaps. I also introduce various study methods, time management strategies, and test-taking skills because I find that in many instances, adult learners benefit from such advice.
