About Sarah
In pursuit of a teaching career, I am currently a PhD candidate in Biochemistry, Molecular, and Cellular Biology at Cornell University. I am extremely passionate about the learning process, and have found my work as a Teaching Assistant and tutor to be incredibly rewarding (both for me and my students) over the years. I have been teaching and tutoring in a formal capacity for 7 years, but I have been informally helping classmates with academic work for my entire school career.
My academic qualifications regarding subject matter include a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Genetics from the University of Rochester and a Master of Science in Biology from American University.
During my time earning both of these degrees, I served as a Teaching Assistant for lecture and lab courses, and I also tutored students through the university learning support centers in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Writing. In all of these capacities, I have received glowing reviews from my students and supervisors, including an award for excellence in teaching.
I am now earning my PhD at Cornell University. My research centers around molecular biology and genome editing. Although I find research intellectually stimulating, teaching is my true passion, and I look forward to sharing my skills and knowledge with students through tutoring.
I received my BS in Molecular Genetics from the University of Rochester in 2015, and I received my MS in Biology from American University in 2017. During my time at each university, I tutored and taught, which allowed me to receive university training for teaching strategies. I am currently enrolled at Cornell University as a PhD candidate, but I am a member of the Center for Teaching Innovation's Teaching Portfolio program; thus, I have attended numerous workshops on effective teaching, and I continue to attend these workshops.

When working with a new student, I like to discuss expectations of the tutoring process, including desired outcomes in the course, amount of support needed, and amount of time to be invested (both by me and by the student). I have worked with many different students, and all have different learning styles, goals, and skillsets. Having a discussion upfront and subsequently tailoring my tutoring to fit the student is crucial to success.
The best advice I can offer about learning Biology is to not treat it as an exercise in memorization. In some ways, learning Biology is like learning a language because certain words are fundamental (and admittedly dense!), but in all other ways, concepts build on each other. Understanding these concepts and truly engaging with them is the only way to be successful, and truthfully it makes the subject much easier!
