About Hazel
Sometimes, there are more important things at stake than simply getting the right answer or using the right process. At Seedling Learning, we strive to help students achieve their goals through the use of exploration and holistic understanding. We aim for an understanding of basic concepts and how to combine and apply them in a variety of situations, rather than the answers to specific cases.
I love seeing the smile on a student's face when they finally understand that concept with which they've been struggling, when they finally solve that problem they've been working, and when they feel like they understand the world around them just a little bit better.
I got started teaching by tutoring my youngest cousin with their algebra! They asked me if I knew much about the quadratic formula, and I taught them a song that I learned way back in the seventh grade. A couple years later, I realized that I enjoyed both helping students from my elementary school learn about new safety and life lessons at school faires, as well as tutoring my university peers when they struggled with computer science, mathematics, and language arts.
I have a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, as well as professional experience both programming and business management. I have worked with kids teaching one-shot lessons, private tutoring, and life and professional coaching for approximately six years.

I like to first analyze a student's typical thought process and determine how they might best learn, be it by lecture and example, hands-on experimentation, a more niche learning style, or any combination. Once I've established how best a student might retain information, I assess their current knowledge level in the given subject, and determine what strengths and weaknesses they may possess.
I have worked with students anywhere between late elementary school age (grade 4-5, age 9-10) and college age (age 18-22), and my favorite kinds of students to work with are those who struggle in a monologue lecture setting. If they need a little more dialogue to bounce their own ideas off of someone, I would love to be that person! I have worked with students with ADHD, autism, and other neurodivergences, and have found that I can connect to them effectively to walk them through my thought process as an example.
Make sure that you can find your teacher *interesting.* Even if the subject matter may be difficult to attend, a captivating teacher can greatly facilitate the learning process. They can better explain their own passion for a subject matter, and convey its importance with more effectiveness than a teacher who simply lectures by the book.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
When you think of your problem subject, are there any specific concepts with which you struggle?
Is your difficulty with a subject a hurdle of understanding, or one of interest?
What sorts of lessons, experiments, examples, and activities have worked for you in the past?
What are your favorite and least favorite subjects? How can you connect those together?
