About John

Hello, I’m John. I currently hold an associate degree in Computer Science and am working towards a bachelors in the same subject, with a minor in English. Throughout my studies I have been disappointed to see that many students do not understand these subjects. Both are exciting subjects when you understand the principles behind them. Sadly, in many formal education systems they are not taught in a manner that inspires their use or betters the proficient understanding of them. I desire to teach these subjects in a way that changes this. Though complex on the surface, once you know what it is that you are working towards, and have direction to get there, the journey to mastery is not only enjoyable, but painless.

Though I have no formal education in teaching, I have, and still work with a team of people where I am responsible for their training. I will use this experience to educate in an efficient and professional manner. My goal is to take the information that I have, and to be able to share it in a straightforward manner, that not only shows the end goal, but allows for proficient understanding of each step to reach that end goal. Even the basics are important to the mastery of a subject, and as such mastery of the basics are key. I also like to use a circular learning method where what we learn today will be drilled and expanded upon as we move forward, this is the key to mastery.

Ultimately, I want to be seen, not as a teacher, but as a friend looking to help as best I can! I remember having to go to my teachers and the stress that caused looking for help, I want to do everything in my power to be that help in a friendly environment. I’m not there to judge, nor do I desire to, I simply want to do my best to help students understand these amazing subjects!

I enjoy getting to share skills that are essential to new people. The subjects that I teach are fascinating to me and I enjoy getting to see people understand them better!

I have been interested in helping others learn since being in college.  I have often helped other people in my school or work learn new skills, with success.  I would like to be able to share this to other students.

I have a bachelors degree in Computer Science from Regent university and multiple years working in the industry as a software engineer. I also lead a game development project where we are developing a new game engine from the ground up.

Typically the first session will be to getting to know the student and what their goals are, as well as determine what their learning method is.  Once that has been achieved it becomes important to establish that you are on their side and intend to give them the best support possible.

My main advice would be to find a teacher who is willing to move at their pace.  No matter how good, or intellegent the teacher may be, if they are moving to quickly, or in a way that the student doesn't understand, it's effectively useless.  Find someone who is willing to work with you, and who is able to inspire you to become both, a better student, and a better person.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would recommend trying to understand their own weeknesses.  In my experience, many students will go to ask the teacher a question, while still thinking they are the best at what it is that they are doing.  They need to be humble enough to recieve instruction. Teachers and tutors are, in most cases, willing and wanting to help, if you let them.
