What I most enjoy about teaching cooking lessons is the pride and satisfaction my students exhibit when they learn a new skill and realize they can do it themselves at home. I love sharing my passion for food, how to cook and eat sustainably, and providing time-saving waste-reducing kitchen hacks that even the most seasoned home cooks can appreciate. And, it doesn't hurt that I get to eat what I create -- is there a better tasting job out there? You can see some of my creativity and passion for cooking on instagram @teachingtable
I have been a teacher, non-profit professional, and adult educator; I have always sought to help others be their best selves. I believe in the plasticity of the brain, that we can can grow our knowledge and skills with practice and challenge. I also sponged up as much as I could about food and cooking. In 2010, I started my neighborhood CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) with neighbors and became even more invested in where my food comes from. I developed a relationship with my farmer and learned more about eating sustainable foods. I practiced how to cook it, and how to put it away for a winter day. Eventually, the tug of the culinary arts and a passion for seasonal local cooking brought me to the Natural Gourmet Institute where I completed the Chef's Training Program in health supportive cooking. I began combining my love of food with education and offering cooking workshops to friends, family and groups of children on the weekends. In early 2018, I left my leadership role at an education non-profit to run Teaching Table full time.

Private clients and private lessons: I conduct an initial phone consultation (15-30 minutes) with my client to learn more about your learning goals, culinary skills or experience, dietary needs and preferences. I also find out your availablity for lessons. I then propose menus and objectives for our classes and welcome your input, making tweaks to accomodate your needs. I provide detailed pricing at this time, and ask for a deposit (~50%) to hold dates for private lessons. I collect remainder of payment on date class is delivered.
Workshops and group class: I post these events and classes on my website on a semi-regular basis, offering about 2-4 per month. Students can read the class description with goals and proposed menu items and register for the class using a simple sign up form. On the form, students indicate allergies or dietary restrictions as well as goals and the menu items they are most interested in learning. Students secure their spot by paying in full for the class. I finalize the menu based on the input of registered students, taking into consideration allergies, dietary restrictions and preferences, as well as seasonality.
* adult home cooks of all abilities, comfort levels and interest in the kitchen
* adults and children with specialized diets, allergies, or restrictions who are learning to cook to heal their bodies or meet their challenging dietary needs (i.e. vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, lactose intollerant, diabetic, specific carbohydrate diet, low FODMAP)
* children of all ages (4-18) from budding interest in cooking to those committed to auditioning for cooking competition reality shows
* corporate groups and professional teams, including the Cholula hot sauce brand team
* Community groups or associations like CSAs, schools, after school programs, and girl scout troops
* patients in specialized health treatment programs
Look for someone who not only knows how to cook, but knows how to teach. You will get most out of a cooking class that is tailored to your interests, dietary needs and culinary goals. A great teacher will strike the right balance between modeling and giving you hands on opportunities to challenge your abilities and develop your confidence.
My Cooking with What You Have Improvisational Cooking Class is a hit! In this class, I teach students how to use what we have on hand (seasonal produce, leftover food scraps, the contents of your pantry, the remnants of jars on the door of your refrigerator) to create gourmet masterpieces. Students use the techniques and strategies for shopping less, cooking more and wasting nothing. Here's what a student has said about this class:
"The improvisational class fundamentally changed how I approach cooking. I have always been fairly tentative in the kitchen, following recipes to the letter--if a marinade called for a quarter teaspoon of allspice, then I was going to go out, purchase allspice, and use exactly that amount. Now I feel much more confident in making substitutions, moving quickly without measuring, and taking inspiration from the ingredients in the fridge and the pantry. In the month since I've taken the class, I've saved both time and money by using items I have on hand as the basis for what I cook. Laura and her team are fun, inspiring, and non-judgmental in leading the session, and I look forward to continuing to expand my skill set in future classes with Teaching Table." - Steph, mom and media professional, 37, Brooklyn

My daughter signed up for in-person cooking lessons with Laura. As soon as we knocked on the door, Laura was great, welcoming us into her warm and inviting kitchen classroom. Laura is an experienced and patient teacher, she helped my daughter jump right into planning and preparing her dishes. After the lesson, Laura invited us into a charming, rustic dining room to enjoy the meal my daughter had proudly prepared. What a great experience, I would definitely recommend taking cooking classes with Laura!
I took the Fancy Chocolate Treats class with a friend and we both loved it. We learned how to make three delicious desserts but even more, we learned the technique of tempering chocolate that can be used for many, many more desserts. The sky is the limit!
I took a fantastic Pierogi class with chef Laura. The pacing allowed us to cook along and the recipe was delicious.
I have taken several Zoom classes with Laura. Although I consider myself someone who knows how to cook, Laura brings so much information to her classes that I always learn something new. Laura is super organized and is a pleasure to spend a few hours with after a busy work day. She sends you a list of what you need to cook along with her or she is comfortable having you watch if you were too busy with work to get everything needed for the class together. I always wanted to go to cooking school and I have found the next best thing!! I can't say enough wonderful things about this talented chef. I did have an opportunity to sample one of her blueberry scones.... to die for.
I’ve learned so much from my classes with chef Laura, from making “rough puff pastry” to butternut squash gnocchi! Her classes are fun! And easy to follow along!
Engaging, fun, informative!
I was completely prepared in advance and it was very well organized. Laura made it fun and educational.
Laura is a great teacher and “spices” up her class with all kinds of interesting info ( like rhubarb. Is a vegetable) she teaches an immense amount in a short time
I attended an online class on making mole, cheese sauce, and margaritas. It was fantastic, so fun, and I learned a lot. I really appreciated that Teaching Table discussed substitution options, as well as food waste practices.
Laura was able to demonstrate, answer questions, and give lots of general information while keeping us on track to actually make our own homemade pasta and a bolognese sauce at home. A great class!
I took Laura's Fine Dining Date Night In class and enjoyed it immensely. We produced a full meal in the two hours including handmade pasta and a sublime desert and it was extremely well received. Laura was very responsive to all my questions throughout the class (as well as beforehand, about ingredients) and I learned some useful skills and tricks, too. Highly recommended.
The class was super approachable, Laura made sure to keep up with engaging everyone and was really great at answering questions even without being able to see the food we were trying to cook in person. Also the dumplings we made were very yummy!
Very personable, knowledgeable, resourceful, passionate about reducing food waste, generous -- and we got tasty results!
fun, fast, and I always learn several things that are useful, in addition to the wonderful recipes that I will use over and over again.
This is the BEST way to spend time with friends and family while needing to remain apart! We had a class with our family, 3 total couples. We live all over the country but we’re all able to cook like we were together. After, we all ate our meal together and had a blast.
Chef Laura was AMAZING, she walked us through each dish and answered all our questions as we cooked. We chose ‘Make Your Own Indian Takeout’ and made Murgh Makhani, Naan, and Chana Saag during the class. Chef Laura also set us up with some recipes we could prepare prior to class, Basmati Rice & Mango Chutney.
We have a basic cooking experience, no chefs, but all cook regularly. The class was comfortable but still taught us a ton. The entire class Chef Laura was dropping great nuggets of information, far beyond just our meal. We loved it so much, we’re already wanting another class!Through teaching table I've taken multiple classes over zoom including gnocchi making, sourdough bread making multi-sessions, and hot pretzel making. Laura is amazing and I've finally learned how to make my dream sweet potato gnocchi. This is a recipe that I go back to at least monthly. The pretzel making class was a family workshop and my child loved the results, we have also gone back to remake this one over and over. Laura has great recipes, tips and tricks and will patiently answer all of her students questions. I highly recommend Teaching Table for cooking classes at any level!
Laura was super engaging, had clear expertise, and felt like my personal sourdough coach during the weeks of the class! So happy I am taking this course.
I loved the sourdough course I took with Laura, and the timing was perfect. COVID gave me a lot of time to pursue something I might not have otherwise experimented with, and I’m so happy I did! She’s a wonderful instructor, explained the process and steps involved in a way that made sense a great experience. She’s vet personable, and I recommend taking one of her classes.
Laura is very pleasant, and easy to follow
She is ALWAYS cheerful, helpful and gives amazing detailed instructions written n virtual with lots if support n follow-up!!
Chef Laura clearly loves what she does and knows how to engage young people in the art of cooking! My 11 year old twins had a blast making delicious and healthy food...and they enjoyed the experience so much we are having Teaching Table come to our home for a family class! Cooking skills, creativity and healthy! Thank you!!!
Chef Laura facilitated a cooking class for my child's birthday party. The kids had a blast and the food was delicious! Chef Laura was patient and inclusive of all participants. I highly recommend Teaching Table.
Laura is a natural teacher with extensive knowledge and experience with family-oriented food preparation and special dietary issues. During her "Cook With What You Have" class she provided us with great ingredients, insight and instruction. Together we created a beautiful flavorful meal and gained skills, tips and an awareness about food preparation we will use going forward. I also attended her knife skills class and developed skills with different types of knives and feel much more comfortable today with my cutting technique.
My seven year old has taken several day camps and workshops with Teaching Table, and loves it! The sessions are structured to give her lots of opportunity for real hands on learning and independence, and making connections beyond what they are cooking that day, not to mention have a lot of fun. I'm always impressed by how well planned each session is and how deep and authentic the learning is.
Laura is a consummate educator who generously shares her kitchen skills, passion and talents in an accessible and inspiring way. Our son has loved every camp and class she's offered.
Laura is a true teacher: she doesn’t just show you how to make something, she teaches the story and background behind what you’re making. Classes are approachable, comfortable, and fun.
Ease of booking, wonderful class, nutritious lesson!
