About John Elizabeth
I'm an award-winning writer with a wide range of proficiencies, published in fiction, poetry, and non-fiction—as well as some literary journalism. I'm also an instructor, and have taught and mentored creative writing to diverse populations of writers in high school, undergrad, and through continuing education programs.
Mentorship is what I specialize in, and what I like most about teaching writing, and I would love to help you further develop your craft. Because I write so many different things, I have a knack for picking up on a writer's voice, and helping them move further toward their passions.
There are some instructors who try and teach their specific way of writing and working to students, but I am much less interested in doing that than I am in helping curate and model my attentions and exercises to push particular students in directions I believe they are already heading toward. My approach helps writers learn how to better be themselves on the page, rather than trying to turn writers into a mimic of myself.
I have an MFA in Creative Writing, and have published two chapbooks of poetry, a full-length book of poetry, as well as a novel. I am the recipient of both The Malahat Review's Long Poem Prize (2019) and the Writers' Trust of Canada's Bronwen Wallace Award for Emerging Writers (2019). My fiction has also been longlisted for the Journey Prize.
Helping support writers as they create the work they are most passionate about.
