About Melanie
Melanie Mays is a professional dancer, singer, actor, director and choreographer. She is still a member in good standing of the professional entertainment unions AEA, SAG/AFTRA, and AGVA. She moved to Monticello, FL after years of dancing, singing and acting professionally in New York City and many other theaters around the USA. She runs a theater company, The Monticello Acting & Dance Co that produces 3 to 4 shows per year: a Children's Theater production and a Broadway Series that uses the more experienced children, teens and adults in the company. Melanie teaches ballet, tap, jazz, acting, musical comedy, voice, piano, and accordion.
I enjoy teaching children, teens and adults to learn to excel in the musical theater arts. At MadCo, we strive to do our best work and a very high level.
I started as a dance assistant to my sister when I was 8. I've taught in many studios and schools over the years.
i have a degree in Music from the University of Missouri at Kansas City, Conservatory of Music. I've been a professional dancer, actor, singer for over 40 years and bring that level of professonalism and experience to my teaching.

Everyone in the class introduces themselves and then we just get going. I pay attention to new students to make sure they are comfortable. I work with them one-on-one to help them get caught up. The classes are group lessons, so I encourage students to jump in and try their best.
All types of students, all backgrounds, races, ages. Dance is for everyone.
Look for a professional class. Technique is important.
Any show that the Monticello Acting & Dance Co produces is a favorite! Alice in Wonderland, summer of 2017 was fantastic! Over 40 children of all ages performing and performing well. Their voices sounded like angels!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should participate and pay attention to the class and instructor. The class is where they learn. If they want to be professional, it's not about their needs. I do not believe in this sort of coddling. If that is what a dancer needs, they should go elsewhere. At the same time, my students have fun and become good, solid performers who can hold their own and perform anywhere because they are versatile, not spoiled and have good attitudes.

I had a great foundation in theatre, but it was from high school. Performing in the shows directed by Melanie Mays, founding member of the Monticello Acting and Dance Co has shaped me into a seasoned performer, able to easily perform many roles.
