About Shannon
I have over 30 years experience in the performing arts and 20 teaching! I am very good and what I do, and do it with terrific energy and enthusiasm!
I was a child of the theatre. My father founded the New Jersey Shakespeare Festival (now Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey) and he and my mother ran it until I was 14. When I was three, my father took me to the Papermill Playhouse’s “The Nutcracker” and shortly after, I began taking ballet lessons with The New Jersey Ballet Company. At age six I began performing in that same annual production and continued doing so for eight years, playing a total of nine roles and understudying three others. During these years, I also performed at my parents’ company as Betty Parris in THE CRUCIBLE, Nell in THE TWO NOBLE KINSMEN, The Boy in WAITING FOR GODOT, Mamillius in THE WINTER’S TALE, and Arthur in KING JOHN. I learned about costume, set, and lighting design (and construction); concessions; fundraising and box office. With my father casting and directing and my mother juggling all aspects of producing and administration, I got an inside look at all the challenges and rewards of a life in the theatre. He later chronicled them in A LIFETIME WITH SHAKESPEARE; NOTES FROM AN AMERICAN DIRECTOR OF ALL 38 PLAYS. In high school I started teaching dance and performed in plays at my own school (Kent Place: including Chrissy in THE SEARCH FOR SIGNS..., Charles in ST JOAN and Betty in VINEGAR TOM, under the direction and instruction of the incredible Bob Pridham) as well as musicals at a neighboring high school (Delbarton: Isabel in “THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE” and Robin in “GODSPELL”). The summer after my junior year, I received scholarships to both the NJ Governor’s School for the Arts as well as Northwestern University’s High School Summer Drama Program. I attended the latter, completing the courses with stellar college recommendations from several professors. Upon graduation from Kent Place in 1994 I was awarded the Dance Prize and a departmental honor for Drama. At Rollins College in Florida, I became involved in a group called Peer Pressure for which I wrote, directed and acted in a show about different issues facing students, performed for freshman at Rollins and neighboring colleges. Rollins had a wonderful theatre department, and I performed in eight mainstage productions (including Pfeni in THE SISTERS ROSENSWEIG, Mrs. Johnson in “BLOOD BROTHERS,” and leads in the school’s annual dance concerts). I worked with costumes, make-up, hair design, set construction, and properties behind the scenes. I was also quite active in Rollins’ second stage, where I directed and choreographed original pieces as well as short plays and musicals. I graduated from Rollins in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre and a Minor in Dance. As a young adult I worked on musicals and classical theatre at regional and community theatres around the country. Highlights of these years included: playing Little Red in “INTO THE WOODS” and Catherine in “PIPPIN” at Chatham Playhouse and Audrey in “LITTLE SHOP...” and Squeaky in “ASSASSINS” at 4th Wall Theatre, all under the direction of Bob Cline; performing in three musicals--principally as Chastity (“Mrs. Moonface”) in “ANYTHING GOES,”--at Struther’s Library Theater under the director of Joe Deer; performing in four musicals--principally as The Stepmother in “CINDERELLA” and Cha-Cha (Understudy Rizzo) in “GREASE”--at Galveston Island Outdoor Musicals under the direction of Neal Larson and others; performing five principal roles in two seasons with Prospect Theater Company including Ilona in “SHE LOVES ME” under the direction of Damian Long as well as choreographing “KISMET,” A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM and co-choreographing “PIRATES OF PENZANCE,” and “A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC”; playing principal roles in two independent features (“Sleepover” directed by John Sullivan and “Diggers” starring Paul Rudd, directed by Katherine Dieckmann) and one student film (“A Touch of Grey” directed by Brett Goldberg for NYC’s First Run Film Festival); playing Cordelia in KING LEAR and choreographing ROMEO AND JULIET for The San Francisco Shakespeare Festival. I produced the New York City premiere of THE AMPHIBIAN SONG at The Abingdon Theatre Company. (Not only did I choose the script and rent the space, but I hired the actors and director, held fundraisers for the production, handled all the design elements, advertising, and press materials, as well as appearing in the show as an actress.) In New York City, I also directed and performed in many original plays and musicals for such companies as The Abingdon Theatre Company, The WorkShop Theater Company, Theater for the New City and The Lambs Little Theater. Highlights from these years included appearing as Hannah in BIG AL starring Richard Masur at the Jewish Community Center of NYC, and Uta Smith in SHELTER by Marcos Stafne, directed by Lynn Burke Bogner, produced by Kim Donovan at West End Theatre. From 2009-2012 I left the theatre world to have two children and be a stay-at-home mom. After that I slowly began to revisit my old stomping grounds, coaching acting and auditioning, and teaching ballet and tap for teenagers and adults. In 2013, one of my dance students, producer Leslie Williams, invited me to return to Chatham Playhouse, where I was pleased to choreograph the original revue “Christmas Cards” by G. David Post and assist director John AC Kennedy. In May of 2014 I taught my first Master Class at Kent Place School, my beloved alma mater. Since then I have been a guest instructor, and substitute taught dance, music, and theatre. In March of 2015 I made my NJ directorial debut with Chatham Playhouse’s production of SPATTER PATTERN by Neal Bell. Performances were March 6-21, and the production earned rave reviews. In early 2016 I worked as a choreographer/assistant director for Kent Place School's musical "Shrek" and the summer of 2016 I taught dance at a local camp. I loved working with the students at both venues! In the spring of 2016, 2017, and 2018 I ran dance auditions for Broadway Boot Camp at Chatham Playhouse. Last summer I returned to Kent Place School to choreograph "Annie" for their two-week summer performing arts intensive before joining the staff of Willow Lake Day Camp as a visual arts instructor for eight weeks. For the 2017/2018 school year I continued to teach at Kent Place School and choreographed/assistant directed “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown.” I also did so for “The Lion King” this summer at Kent Place’s Musical Theatre Intensive Program: ‘Broadway Boot Camp,’ before moving to Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania where I am now a private auditon/interview coach and substitute teacher.
