About Monica
After graduating with a BA in Art in 2016, I began teaching 3rd grade at a classical school in Texas. My co-teacher and I created all of our own lesson plans and materials, and I tutored any students in need of extra practice before and after school. This gave me the opportunity to teach many foundational elementary concepts at multiple levels. I grew to love working one-on-one with my students to really hone in on essential concepts and allow each student to develop as fully as possible. I am blessed to currently teach and tutor students in literacy and reading comprehension, which I believe is the most essential of all the curricula, as well as work as a private school one-on-one and small group teacher for grades K-12 in all subject areas. I absolutely love getting to know each student, further developing their strengths, and transforming former weaknesses into strengths.
I am available to tutor in art, reading, math, literature, grammar, Latin, science, history, writing, language comprehension, and spelling. With training from multiple sources, I have had the opportunity to develop unique and poignant teaching methods, drawing upon the strengths of various approaches. Socratic dialogue is essential for helping students develop articulation and ownership of their knowledge, coupled with understanding the how and why behind concepts and processes.

I received my Bachelors of Arts in Art and a minor in Art History, giving me the technical skills and articulation to teach foundational through advanced drawing, painting, and art history lessons.
Throughout my time as a 3rd grade teacher, I was continuously trained by my administration and the Barney Charter School Initiative team out of Hillsdale College. I received training in all core subject areas, including history, science, math, literature, and literacy/spelling. I am trained in the Riggs Literacy Program, a phonics-based literacy and spelling program that is both challenging and rewarding for students. For math, I was trained in Singapore Math, a program that focuses on teaching the foundational concepts of mathematics with a goal of true understanding, then scaling up to learning the algorithm and computation for each concept. All of this training was through the lens of classical education, aimed at helping each student see the beauty and joy within each subject, as well as giving them the practical tools to master concepts no matter how challenging.
My most recent training is through Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes, an organization that focuses on tutoring students with reading struggles in areas of both decoding and comprehension. Through Socratic questioning, the goal is to help each student build imagery in his or her mind, either of words or concepts, in order to strengthen reading skills.
With a variety of training and experience, I am able to teach many students in all core subject areas, art, and literacy, especially those in need of building foundational skills and concepts.

When I meet a new student, I begin by discussing the student's current situation with him, her, and/or family members, to get a clear picture of the student's strengths, weaknesses, and goals. I also look at work samples from school, if possible, to see the specific subject matter and concepts being presented to the student. I then ask some content questions, working from broad to specific, to hone in on the areas that the student needs more practice in. From there, we can begin to create a tutoring plan for what to practice and accomplish each session, with a focus on reaching the student's goals.
