About Stephanie
My background is in public education K-12. My current job works with children with autism. My scholarly studies are in psychology, phisiology, holistic health, and ultimately tie my expertise in art education to occupational therapy. I am especially interested in giving visual art lessons to individuals with different abilities and/or who need trauma informed and/or intersecting their artistic skills with another subject area of interest.
I am well trained as an oil painter. I am well versed in arts and crafts. I have taught wheel throwing pottery classes. I especially love mixed media, installation, sculpture and contemporary practices.
As an educator I am a huge proponent to Big Idea (Dr. Sydney Walker) art education, project based learning, inquiry based, service based, inter-disciplinary appoaches. I use the vygotsky method of I-do, we-do, and you-do when teaching new skills.
Often students are in need of coaching for the creative and critical thinking process, and some new skills and then students are equiped to explore their own ideas, processes and creativity. The goal of my service is to put myself out of the job, but fostering an interest and some practice into an independent, confident artist!
I started teaching art because I loved the theraputic effects that an artistic practice can have on my own well being. I fell in love with ideas and the challenge of materializing them. I also adore people; my experiences happen to be primarily with children. I am invested in my state, my community and my family. Currently I am working towards the goal of marrying my teaching practice to occupational therapy, by pursing an OT certification as well. Did you know occupational therapy has deep roots in the fine arts and crafts movements?
I am a certified Visual Art Teacher for K-12 grade in the state of Michigan. I have five years of teaching experience ranging in setting from public, charter to alternative and urban to rural. I have taught online lessons for 11 months. I am a current practicing artist, and I am a parent - which both contribute to my superpowers ; )

My favorite teaching jobs have been in alternative education settings. Using trauma informed techniques and tapping into my student's individual interests and having a highly flexibible curriculum I am able to work with individuals with different or exceptional abilities or needs.
