My typical process with working a new student is first making sure the student is comfortable by asking questions about their school and their life. Then I give them a survey on how they study. for example through hearing, visuals, etc. Then I ask what help they need and ask questions to get a better understand of the assignment and make sure they fully understand what is going on.
The advice I would give a student looking to hire a teacher is if the teacher is not able to teach the concept more than once or can't explain it clearly. Move on to a new one because it's better to have a teacher who has the patience and understand from your point of view of the homework.
