About Haritha
Having tutored for 2 years and been a debate coach for 4 years, I have extensive experience in all things reading, writing, and public speaking. I have worked with students from 8 - 18 years old, teaching research skills, reading comprehension, essay fundamentals, SAT reading, public speaking, and more. I have simultaneously been a student and teacher for many years, so I understand both what students need and how tutors can best work with students to help them learn more effectively.
When students learn to read, write, or speak effectively, the benefits will follow them throughout their lives. Regardless of their choice of career, learning to research, analyze complex writings, and convey ideas effectively are extremely important. I enjoy knowing that they will be able to consistently implement what they’ve learned regardless of where they go.
I have been a tutor for 2 years, and a debate coach for 4 years, with many of my students reaching late elimination rounds at debate tournaments and improving their reading and writing skills dramatically.
In high school, I had A’s in AP Literature and American Literature Honors (the most advanced literature courses at my school), a 4.3 GPA, a 1550 SAT, and a 780 on the SAT II Literature subject test, widely considered one of the hardest SAT subject tests.
I also received 3rd Prize in the John Locke Institute International Essay Competition for my essay on the impact of political ignorance in society, competing against nearly 950 students from top high schools around the world. As a debater, I placed among the top 64 in the country for Lincoln-Douglas debate at the NSDA National Tournament, and qualified to nationals twice.
I am currently an incoming freshman at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, where I will be studying International Political Economy.

When working with a new student, I offer a free 20-minute consultation with the parent and student where I discuss the student’s struggles, the parent’s concerns, and try to understand how the student can improve. This includes assessing what their working style and study habits are like, asking questions about what type of reading/writing/literature the student struggles with, and finally, providing a recommendation on how often to meet, what type of homework and how much homework to give to the student (if the student wishes to have homework assigned by me), and I explain strategies that I will use to help the student.
After each class, I send an update to the parent as to what happened during the class, the student’s progress, and the homework that I assigned to the student.
I have tutored elementary, middle, and high school students in the fundamentals of essay writing (both creative and nonfiction essay writing) and reading comprehension. I have also worked with high school students on editing essays (many of my students have received A’s on their essays following working with me on editing essays), and on SAT tutoring.
Additionally, I have worked as a debate coach to elementary, middle, and high school students for 4 years–I have been able to assist students in public speaking, argumentation, critical thinking, reading comprehension, and research, with many of my students reaching elimination rounds at debate tournaments.
I would recommend that you make sure that your tutors is understanding of your needs and learning styles, and is willing and able to adapt their teaching style to suit your needs. Additionally, it’s important that your tutor is approachable–you need to be comfortable asking questions and communicating with them.
It would also greatly help your search if you are able to pinpoint where exactly you are struggling and convey that to your tutor–the more specific you are, the better. For example, if you are struggling with writing essays, what exactly do you think you are struggling with? Is it understanding metaphors, analyzing nonfiction, writing persuasive essays, etc.
If you don’t know exactly what you are struggling with, but have a general idea of what you need help with, make sure your tutor is able to ask the right questions and work with you to pinpoint where exactly you are struggling and how you can improve.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. What are your goals?
For example, do you want a higher SAT score, better reacing comprehension, better essay writing abilities, or something else? As a teacher, my philosophy is not to just “get you the grade,” but to make sure you have a toolkit to consistently succeed in the future, and it helps to know what you want to improve on.
2. How much work are you willing to put in?
Depending on your answer to this question, I can assign more or less homework.
3. How much help do you think you need, and how best do you think I can help you?
This will help me understand how to tailor my lesson plans to best suit your learning style.

Details
I have a flat rate of $25 per hour. This also includes being able to contact me throughout the week for questions about homework, or to receive corrections when homework is completed.
I also send an update to the parent after each class discussing what happened during the class, the student’s progress, and the homework that I assigned to the student.
