About Rachel

I'm a working writing professional, and have been since 2008 when I graduated with my fine arts degree from Boston University. I have studied here and abroad, taking on training in London at the Royal Shakespeare Company and London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. I had my work showcased here and abroad, on stage at the National Theatre in London and in cinemas at the Toronto International Film Festival. I bring that grounded, wide view of my experience to bear on my teaching. When I cultivate a student's writing, or undrstanding of the written word, I do so from a position that is not theoretical. I do so from a position of knowing what it takes to develop material that begs for a reader, and how those that write intend for you to consume their work. Having been a working artist for most of my adult life, and constantly traveling for that work, I have a wide-ranging understanding of the arts in general, and so apply outside tools such as analyzing photography, painting, foreign language, and cinema as ways to access and better understand any given piece of literature. And the more a student understands and respects literature, the more discerning their writing instincts will become.

I can say, in very clear and immediate terms, that the thing I enjoy most is when a student discovers the power that resides in them when they unlock the hidden coding and added meaning to language. Whether in the breaking down the symbolism behind Steinbeck's prose, or seeing their own layered experience as a human reflected in a personal essay for me, there is a distinct moment when this power is first garnered and understood and it's truly electrifying. The enjoyment builds from there, when we can then work together to craft deeper and richer prose that communicates more deeply what the student wishes to say.

I was invited to speak on education panels or oversee workshops at the college level, and that set me on a course with it.

I studied dramatic writing at Boston University's conservatory, and then took English courses at the Arts and Science department as a compliment. I was a teaching assistant for first year writing students my senior year. I went on to do post-graduate study in London, at RSC, LAMDA and through placements at Battersea Arts Centre, Finborough Theatre and the Natioanl Theatre. Returning to the states, I immediately moved my professional writing from stage to screen. Three years ago I was beginning to be invited to speak on education panels at colleges and universities with creative writing programs, or dramatic arts programs, and took up the role of mentor for many of the students I spoke to. That positive experience developed into my developing workshop courses at high schools and some colleges in visual literacy, creative writing, and dramatic writing. Confident, I started taking on individual students nearly two years ago and have overseen the study of nearly a dozen students since that time. Some have stayed with me for continued, long-term instruction and some have opted for short, intentional courses.

I ask students to send me as much past writing as possible, for me to analyze, then the first lesson is spent gauging what they've read and studied, and their general aptitude. I like to marry literary study with writing when possible, as the two feed one another. So I often suggest two hour lessons that allows the study of both simultaneously. If that kind of time commitment is unavailable, then I will toggle between the two courses of study. I like to build acumen for creative and academic writing, but can focus on one form if there's a preference for the student. I craft a process that fits each student. Some students need me to prompt them and deepen their vocabulary and be more directly administrative so as to catalyze their skillset. Others are more self-directed and do best with me giving them instruction that leads them to have heavier homework loads.

I have worked with students in a wide range, middle school through college. I have worked with students in the public and private school system, and some with high aptitude and others who struggle with literacy.

Ask that teacher what they've read recently, and ask them for a response. If it is trite, or doesn't strike you as engaging or challenging, then your classroom will remain unchallenging.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I always like to ask "what's the worst grade you've gotten back in the last year, what was the project, and, speaking from your teacher's perspective, what did you do to deserve that grade?" I think that puts a student in the mindset of objectively seeing their shortfalls and perhaps understanding where they need help.
