About Alexandra
I have several years of experience working with students both inside and outside the classroom environment. Beginning with my senior year of college, I volunteered as a peer mentor for an after school program in Camden and fell in love with the students. Since my experience, I have continued working with students, and learn new skills from every experience. I always am very patient with my students, and get a sense of their learning styles in order to create a successful learning environment. I never back away from a challenge, and always believe that the student has the potential to unlock new skills. I am very passionate about my work, and promise to provide the best experience for the students. I am a visual learner, which has been beneficial when teaching my students new skills, especially in basic math when they are learning addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. I have also used visual learning to instruct my younger students on learning to write letters and numbers, as well as, imagining characters or settings when working on creative writing skills. As a result, my students enjoy learning the different subjects, and are able to improve their skills.
I enjoy coming up with creative lesson plans for my students, and observing their reactions when they begin to display their confidence for the subject(s) they may have been struggling in previously. I also enjoy using previous learning and development skills that I was taught prior to elementary education college courses, and using those methods on my students. Most importantly, I love creating a positive learning atmosphere for my students, and displaying all the different ways that learning can be fun!
I have always had a passion for working with children, and feel the most rewarded when they are able to develop confidence in themselves. In elementary, middle, and high school, I remember the teachers that worked one-on-one with me to ensure I understood the lessons to the best of my ability. It inspired me to want to work with children, and create the same level of excitement my teachers provided me. It's the best rewarding feeling in the world to know the student is making the most of their education.
I have been babysitting since I was thirteen, which has allowed me to gain valuable skills for working with students including patience, organization, dedication, and conflict resolution. In addition, I have been volunteering with elementary and middle school-aged students since my senior year of high school from tutoring in small group environments, to assisting teachers in the classroom, and instructing after school programs that involve health and wellness. Many of the techniques I learned from my years of instruction include using creativity, turning the lessons into an activity to keep the students engaged, problem-solving, studying methods to help students improve in the specific lesson of the subject, encouragement, and having a reward system in place for the positive outcomes.

During the first meeting the student, I will have an introduction session to understand the student's interests, hobbies, favorite classes in school, as well as their strengths and weaknesses in the subject matter they are being tutored in. I also conclude the session earlier to speak with the parents, to get a sense of the student's learning styles. I always take notes about what the student desires to improve on, and come up with unique lesson plans that tailor their learning abilities.
I have worked with students from suburbs, city schools, ESL students, children with learning disabilities and special needs, as well as children from Israel. Each experience has allowed me to learn new lessons myself as an instructor, and study and refine them to use them on future lesson plans.
The best advice I would give a student is to make sure the student feels confident that the tutor has a strong sense of knowledge in the subject they are wanting to learn, and don't ever feel nervous to ask the tutor any questions about their lesson.
The most recent event I am fond of is when I helped one of my tutees improve on their creative writing skills. My student first felt nervous trying to come up with the perfect story, but they soon began to have more confidence when I allowed for imperfections in their story. I always believe that the first attempt is not meant to be perfect, and learning doesn't always have to require a rigid structure. It is more unique when creativity can be mixed into the lessons.

Students shouldn't have to think through what to ask the teacher, and feel confident to reach out to them if they are struggling in the subject(s) the teacher is instructing.
