About Kai-Lilly
While working to design my teaching philosophy, I recalled some advice a former NHL player gave me while I was coaching young players just learning how to skate. He told me “ the most important thing at this age is that the kids are on the ice. They fall, and they get up, and then they aren’t afraid to fall anymore.”
Remembering this, I always plan my lessons with the goal of engaging the students in a way that would “just get them on the ice,” or, rather, just begin to find out what they enjoy writing and what they feel comfortable writing-- without fear.
As a former collegiate athlete, I understand how difficult it can be to balance life and school work. I have spent time teaching at the highschool level, and am now instructing a seminar at Columbia, so I feel I can connect to a variety of students.
When giving feedback on work, I always focus on what the student is doing well already, before discussing areas of their writing that require a second glance. I find that this encourages and boosts up students, rather than brings them down.
My goal is to give students the ability and passion to learn on their own. I am committed to focusing on the strengths and greatness of students first and foremost. Growing up, I had teachers, coaches, and tutors who inspired me and changed my life. It is my hope and my goal to return the favor.
I love connecting with students and truly seeing their faces light up when they truly understand something for the first time. One example that comes to mind is when I shared a very challenging poem with my high schoolers. This risk was worth the reward and the students were able to notice tricks the author was using after a brief lesson. They were jovial and excited to be able to unlock the language themselves. Some of my students even brought in new poems inspired by the poet.
I have always helped others in classrooms and editing. However, I was able to finally get a classroom experience this year through Columbia's Teacher Association ( CAT). Here, I worked with high school students to edit and help them generate creative work. I also worked to help my students edit essays in other classes. It has always been my dream to teach.
I have a Bachelor of arts from Trinity College where I double-majored in English and Women, Gender, and Sexuality with a minor in Classical Studies. At Trinity, I served as the President's fellow for the Women, Gender, and Sexuality department. Essentially, this meant that I represented the department to faculty, students, donors, and alumni and helped develop the curriculum and ensure the program was on the correct path. Now, I am working on my Master of Fine Arts degree at Columbia University, where I am engaging with the discourse around writing. I am also in workshops with my peers where I constantly give them feedback and think of ways they can improve their writing. Through Columbia, I also teach an after-school creative writing workshop at Frank Sinatra highschool. I also do copy-editing for the Columbia Journal. That being said, I feel proficient and confident in essay writing, creative writing, editing, and teaching. I also coached hockey for USA hockey, and that experience really helped my ability to communicate with kids.

I like to make sure the student trusts me and can express themselves before we begin. Every student is different, so I like to start with exercises that let me know what the student needs. Depending on age, I will ask them what they are passionate about, what they feel they want to work on, and what they hope for our sessions together. From there, we can start doing reading and writing exercises that give me a general sense of where they are at.

Perfect! Such a delight! I worked with Kai-Lily for a number of weeks on a very important paper (5-8pgs). I was having some structural issues that she was able to address so comprehensively. Her input and guidance is such a breath of fresh air!! Could not recommend enough!
Thank you Kai!!Perfect! She was awesome! I was panicking about my final paper (12-20 pg) and she helped structure my essay beautifully. She was always available for questions and advice. Dont struggle alone, if you're having issues contact her immediately. She's very organized, patient, and compassionate. I would recommend her to anyone especially if you struggle with writing!
