About Nina
With an undergraduate degree in Creative Writing from The University of Chicago, and while pursuing a master’s degree in Urban Education,
I have edited hundreds of essays, some of which have won awards and been published in literary magazines. My strengths are in tweaking for clarity, length and tone. Need help writing an introduction? I will prompt you toward what you really want to say. I’m cognitively flexible and am willing to tutor tricks to extend vocabulary!
Seeing a student’s face light up when they get an idea they know they can run with really makes my day.
I have always been passionate about education, and knew from the eighth grade that I would be teaching somebody something, be it a language, scientific properties, or how to improve their grammar usage.
As the saying goes, you learn something new every day; so we might as well all keep our minds open to learning.
I have written hundreds of nonfiction essays, with a focus on personal narrative and up-close details. Think of close reading; I specialize in close writing.
My essays have gone through numerous workshop environments, strengthening my craft. I completed two full years of creative writing courses, while running creative thinking activities in my spare time and participating in small group workshops on the side.
I have been unofficially tutoring my whole life, with a plethora of younger siblings, cousins and their friends to show for it.

Students send me a draft of their work, then I send back a version with thorough comments and a whole-picture reflection on areas of strength and areas for improvement.
Students can send me a version of their work in beginning stages, and we can chat about the direction the writer wants the piece to go, in person or on the phone. I will prompt the writer with a series of engaging questions to push past any creative block.
Grades pre-K through 12 and adults.
