About Josie
I'm an undergraduate student at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. In both high school and college, I have had many opportunities to tutor other students in both history and English. It is a joy to help students become stronger readers and writers.
I have earned a score of 5 on both the AP English Language exam and the AP English Literature exam, and I scored in the 99th percentile in reading and writing on my SATs. I have tutored middle and high school students in English, and I have assisted fellow college students with their essays.
Not everyone loves history and English as much as I do, so I do what I can to make the subjects accessible to all students by adjusting my approach to suit each individual's needs. My favorite part about tutoring is seeing the moment when everything clicks for the student. It is a privilege to help a student understand a text that at one point seemed challenging and incomprehensible, or to help transform a disorganized essay into one that the student can be proud of. My ultimate goal is to equip students with reading and writing skills that will enable them to comprehend any text and compose any paper that might be assigned to them in the future. My hope is that each of my students will master these skills well enough that they will no longer need my help.

When I first meet with a new student, I try to get an understanding of their strenghts and weaknesses in the subject. It helps to see a copy of a recent essay before we meet so that I can get a better idea of what to focus on in tutoring. During our first meeting, we'll formulate a gameplan and set goals. Then we'll dive right in and start working together on accomplishing those goals.
