About Luke

I've been passionate about teaching for as long as I can remember, leading a lesson for the first time to my 5th grade classroom. Since then, I've had the opportunity to engage in meaningful work in German and English and have taught in a variety of settings.

My extensive experience in German and English tutoring allows me to work with students from all backgrounds and at varying levels. Cumulatively, I've acted as a tutor for 2+ years, but as an educator for the entirety of my time in college, helping teach classes to young children and college students. This dynamic range is what makes my tutoring fun and successful from day one!

Experience:

German Tutor: 2016-2018

English Tutor: 2017

German Teacher: 2016-2019

English Teaching Assistant (Focus on Grammar): 2019

I have strong competencies in grammar and essay writing (in both German and English), and a love of language overall! Reach out to me if you have any questions!

Students don't know what they're capable of sometimes. Seeing a student discover a concept on their own, or asking a question that solidifies an idea is one of the most worthwhile experiences! It means that students are learning, and that what they are learning excites them. I always strive to make my lessons fun and engaging so that students can have more experiences like that!

I started teaching when I was only 10 years old, and have loved it ever since.

When I was older, I would frequently help my friends and other students with their homework. When one of my peers told me that I could simplify concepts, I began looking into education as a future career.

I have a B.A. in German with a minor in Education.

2016: I worked as a German immersion school teacher at "Die Deutsche Schule Corvallis" and was an independent German tutor.

2017: I continued my work as a German tutor and at "Die Deutsche Schule Corvallis," but also began tutoring in English while abroad in Germany. I helped as an English tutor at Corvallis High school and as a teaching aid in the German classroom.

2018: I began teaching a free community class in German for beginners. I continued tutoring and began working with international students in English tutoring.

2019: I co-taught German 113 at the college level, and taught English in Macau, China, focusing mainly on speaking, listening, and grammar instruction.

2020: I co-taught English as a foreign language to secondary school students in Bregenz and Dornbirn, Austria. This was facilitated by the Fulbright program.

When working with someone new, our first lesson will primarily be about getting to know you! Knowing where you need to focus and what you hope to gain from tutoring helps me set goals for the both of us. Understanding where your strengths lie is also really important for us to develop what you're good at and where we can see room for growth.

After that, lessons go pretty smoothly. You lead as much as you would like, and I supplement with areas that I feel can provide more help in certain areas.

We provide feedback for each other as we go, letting each other know if something is not working. In this way, we can make sure we are capitalizing on our time in tutoring.

I've worked with students from all ages, including elementary through college. I've also worked exensively with English Language Learners, and helped conduct research on English Language Learners with Learning Disabilities.

This means that I've also worked with motivated students and unmotivated students. Because these demand different approaches, I've been able to cultivate the necessary skills to help students achieve their goals in German and English.

If you are seeking a German tutor, ask them "Can you explain when to use the four cases in German?" One of the difficulties of the language is the unique grammar, and its vital that tutors and teachers know each one in and out.

For English tutors, you need to ask yourself how they teach composition. Explicit grammar instruction here has been shown ineffective. However, even if teachers move away from grammar, their topics can be uninteresting. Look for a teacher that lets you explore your interests! Write about what applies to you.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
You should think about what your goals are! How long term or short term are they? These don't need to be illustrious goals, but having a rough outline helps me figure out the best way to support you.
