About Kathryn
Reading and writing are two of the most applicable skills for a student, regardless of what their future plans may be. I am passionately devoted to improving students skills, no matter what level they're starting at, all while helping them discover the joys of language!
I studied English at Princeton University, was accepted to the Teach for America program, and have taught 7th grade ELA for two years in Selma, Alabama. On average, my students reading skills improved by 1.5 grade levels within the course of 6 months, demonstrated by ACT Explore testing.
I have ample experience with personalization and differentiation. The past 2 years, I've instructed students on varying levels, from those beginning on a 2nd grade level to those on an advanced 12th grade level, all in the same classroom. I am committed to culturally relevant pedegogy and understand that different students connect and benefit from access to different materials, but always ensure that any materials cover the appropriate grade-level standards.
My skill set: trained Google Educator and have expeirence from this past spring conducting effective online courses, differentiated learning, standards-based instruction, curriculum building including the design thinking process, persuasive/narrative writing, and college test/essay prep.
Please note: My passion for language does not stop at the written word, bur rather extends to all forms of communicative expression. Inspired by my insights gained in the classroom, I have started a nonprofit called Black Belt Youth Arts Collective, which utilizes the creative process to help students in rural communities create not just art, but new opportunities for themselves. I am happy to work with creative youth looking to hone their craft, as well.
(concealed information)
I enjoy the "ah-ha!" moments that occur when a student makes a connection that leads to comprehension. However, I also enjoy the process that builds up to that moment. For the learning process to succeed, a student needs discipline, goal-setting skills, resilience, and curiousity. Teaching those values and skills is one of my favorite parts of teaching because they lead to success outside of the classroom as well.
My training is 3 fold. My experience studying English at Princeton cemented my personal analysis and writing skills. My monthly professional development training for the past 2 years with TFA has kept me up to date on the most effective instruction processes and philosophies while providing me with consistent coaching. Finally, my experience in the classroom the past two 2 years has provided me with the practical skills that can only come from live application of my training -- differentiation in practice, building relationships, choosing the most relevant and effective materials, and adjusting the plan when needed.

STEP 1: Getting to know the student and their parent(s)/guardian(s) as individuals -- it is important to connect on a personal level before diving into academic process, as a postivie partnership is the basis of academic success.
STEP 2: Give them 1) a standardized diagnostic assessment (will vary depending on grade level) to see their standardized ability level and 2) go through reading passages and have them produce writing sample so I can evaluate their strengths and areas of growth on a more personlalized level.
STEP 3: Create an action plan with small goals leading to an ultimate goal -- I will go over the results from the diasnostics mentioned above with the student and their parent(s)/guardian(s). This conversation will inform the a goal setting reflection that the student is to fill out.
STEP 4: Follow action plan -- My philosophy is that students should be held accountable for their own learning, and my role is to guide, evaluate, and support that student. We will work together to follow, and when needed, revise their action plan.
I have worked with preschoolers, elementary school-aged students with clinical emotional/behavioral challenges, high school students in an after-school program, adult English Language Learners, and most recently, middle school students in Selma, Alabama.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would recommend students, regardless of age, should think about the following questions:
1) What type of activities do I enjoy doing? What are the skills that I use when I do those activities, and what do I enjoy about the activities?
2) What makes me feel confident? What makes me shut down or clam up?
3) What are my top 3 long term goals? What smaller goals can I set to achieve each of these?
This pre-conversation reflection will allow students communicate their needs better by helping the teacher understand them as a whole person and decide what approach to take to their learning.
