About Kristin
I have tutored ESL/EFL/ESoL for more than 10 years in Michigan, South Korea, and California. My specialty is 1:1 conversation for adults of any level. I help people feel at home in America. I respect my students and their privacy.
Process: We chat. I take notes. I help you say what you can't say. I choose important mistakes to correct. I teach vocabulary and grammar when you need it. You take the notes home and study as much as you want. It's easy to remember because you learned by using English in a real conversation. My students see me as a friend and a teacher.
Private experience: I have tutored CEOs, doctors, engineers, college students, accountants, refugees, and more from Asia, Europe, and Africa.
Corporate experience (Seoul, South Korea): I created and ran an ESL/culture program for 1500 engineers at Samsung world headquarters. I worked with executives and clients at Lundbeck Korea. I taught classes at LG world headquarters.
Nonprofit experience (San Jose, CA): I taught classes for seniors and for refugees at an Asian community center.
Qualifications: Bachelors Degree in International Studies from Michigan State University, TESOL certification
Editing: I have edited biotech patents, contracts, college essays, self-help blog posts, executive reports, and more. Rates start at $15/page.
I can also teach piano in easy English.
I love getting to know people. I have always been interested in other cultures, and tutoring conversation is a window to the world.
I love learning how languages are different. People's strengths and weaknesses in English often come from their native language's grammar and pronunciation. I have studied French, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, and Hawaiian. It's a hobby! I can only speak some Korean now.
I'm very good at understanding what people are trying to say, and I love how excited people are when they are understood even though they felt hopeless. Sometimes I only need two words and some hand movements to get a whole story.
I love the firsts. The first time a Starbucks employee understands your order. The first time you speak up in a meeting. The first time you understand what's going on on a TV show without subtitles. The first time you realize you've started thinking in English. The first time you ask me to read a news article with you. The first time you tell me that you won't need me much longer.
I always corrected friends' English as a child, and everyone was annoyed. Then I made international friends in college. They thanked me for correcting them and said people would pay me for it! I started tutoring ESL my first semester.

We meet in a public place like a coffee shop or office for a free conversation about your goals and experiences. I take notes and tell you what I think you should work on first and how I can help you. We plan for future lessons.
I have worked with students from age 8 to 98 from all over the world. My job is to listen, so I have learned about many different cultures and professional fields. I like working with adults because I learned Korean after moving to Korea at 21 years old, so I know how it feels to be an immigrant learning every day.
Know why you want help.
Do you want daily life to be more comfortable? Do you want to participate in groups of friends or coworkers instead of feeling lost? Do you have a translator for work but wish you didn't need them? Do you want a better relationship with someone who only speaks English? I am the right tutor for you.
Do you need help writing papers, preparing presentations, or proofreading? I might be the right tutor for you.
Do you need to pass a test? Do you want extra help with a class? Do you want to study using books? I am not the right tutor for you.
I have two dogs. This is our first winter together, and I got them matching sweaters. It wasn't easy to put the sweaters on, but they looked so cute! If you want to meet my dogs, choose a dog-friendly place to meet and ask me to bring them to our lesson.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Why do I want help?
How good do I think my English is?
How does speaking English make me feel?
How hard will I work to improve? Be honest. It's okay if the answer is embarrassing.
How long do I expect to take lessons?
When will I feel like I'm good enough? How will I know?

I was fluent in English from school in Europe, but American English and culture were uncomfortable for me. Kristin helped me understand the accent, slang, idioms, and culture. She gave me homework like watching Star Wars and baseball. America has a lot of baseball idioms! I had lessons once a week, and we talked about my homework and life in general. She’s a good listener. I think she should be a therapist. I liked when she said, “this is the correct way to say this, but this is how most Americans say it.” I still have my notebook from our lessons. It’s full of useful words, sentences that remind me of conversations, and cute drawings.
