About Kevin
If you're looking for expert instruction from a passionate tutor, I'm your guy. I scored in the 99th percentile on all the tests I teach, and, perhaps more importantly, I have many years of experience helping students prepare for standardized tests. Standardized tests can be tricky, yet predictable. Over the years, I have developed a tested method that will streamline your ability to reach your full potential on any test.
I offer test prep tutoring for the SAT, ACT, and College Essay Services.
I am an Economics Graduate at Yale University. During my application times, I was admitted Early Action to Princeton, and Regular Decision to Yale. As I am only a few years out of the college application process, I will have insights that none of the older tutors on this site will have. With a 1570 SAT and 36 ACT, the strategies I teach are proven to be successful. My understanding on the College Essay goes beyond that of basic structural and grammatical edits, which is the standard service in the industry. I will help you give that extra “oomph” that the admissions officers are looking for.
Consistently, my students have raised their scores on the SAT by over 100-150 points and ACT by 4-7 points. My students have also been admitted to the top universities in the country, including: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, and Stanford.
I know how important these tests mean to you, and I’m dedicated to helping you improve your scores. Any tutor that promises instant improvement is a fraud. It will take time and dedication from your part. But if you decide to work with me, I will help you along this journey with the techniques I have acquired over my years of experience.
All of my students receive support throughout their entire test prep process: structured lessons that include lesson materials and homework assignments; regular practice tests; and 24/7 access to ask me questions or request feedback.
I know this process is stressful, and my goal is to make the process as smooth as possible.
Good Luck, and Stay Strong!
My favorite part of teaching is making a difference in students' academic success through test scores and improved grades. I strive to give my students the confidence to succeed on their own and cultivate a sincere passion for learning.
I first started teaching when I was a Yale student to pay for my student loans. I didn't think much of it, but after seeing the joy in my student's faces after they exceeded their score improvement goals after months of hard work, I believe I formed a new passion. Since then, I have been in the tutoring industry for over a decade.

Kevin Fang is a college counseling expert and veteran test prep instructor. Unsatisfied with the current standard of college consulting services, Kevin founded Ivy Guru. His belief that premier consulting services should not be limited to America’s elite has resonated with admissions committees across the nation. In a sea of thousands of private college counselors, his name is synonymous with helping students of all backgrounds beat colleges at their own game and earn admission to the colleges of their dreams. Prior to founding Ivy Guru, Kevin was a private college consultant based in New York City with over a decade of experience. Over the years, he has cracked the secret to the college essay, helping thousands ofstudents express their aspirations andbackgrounds in a way that impresses admission officers behind hidden gates. He is a former perfect scorer on the SAT and ACT, and gained admission to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Stanford during his application years. A member of the National Association for College Admissions Counseling (NACAC), he regularly conducts workshops on college admissions for corporate and educational events. For those parents and students interested in working directly with Kevin, know that he works with only 30 selected students every year. An online interview process in mid-July is conducted annually to determine who is lucky enough to work with him, as almost all his students get into their top choice university.

SAT/ACT: First, I will give each new student a diagnostic test from my extensive database of past official tests I have licensed with the College Board and the ACT. These can not be found anywhere else on the internet. Then we will have a 20-minute zoom session where we will go over the test together, look at their strengths and weaknesses, and draft a personalized plan that will most efficiently increase their standardized scores. All of this is free of charge. After that, during each 2-hour session (I like 2 hours at a time, as it gives us optimal time to go over each section of the respective test), we will go over each section on an official test passage by passage. I am a firm believer in practicing only on past official tests, where you can get an accurate grasp of the questions on test day.
College Essay: I work with students during every phase of the writing process, whether it's brainstorming ideas, polishing essay structure, or adding the finishing touches. We will have a 20-minute zoom session, free of charge, so I have a brief idea of what stage your essays are at, and give you a personalized plan and estimated timeline of how long each university's essays will take.
Every student I teach is different. I have had students with a 1500+ SAT/33+ ACT wanting to just get a few more points and later gain admission to Ivy League universities and students scoring below the 25th percentile, wishing to get a signigicant score improvement to meet the qualifications to get into their dream state university.
Unless you are living in a major city, I would recommed hiring a tutor online. I can honestly say a high-quality tutor from NYC of San Francisco will be much more efficient than a local tutor in rural Arkansas. Of course, there are alwats exceptions, but this is a general rule of thumb.
Look far and wide. I recommend platforms such as Wyzant and this website over established curriculum companies like Crimson Education and Veritas Prep. This way, you can get personalized instruction 1-to-1 for half the price.
A few months back, I worked with Jake on the ACT. He is autustic with severe ADHD. I had to develop new techniques to help him understand the standardized questions better. In the end, he raised his score from a 21 to a 28, and I am super proud of him. I think I have become a much more patient tutor after this experience.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Tell the tutor your score improvement goals, what you think are your weakest sections, and your availablity. Ask what their lesson plan is like:
What strategies do you employ?
Which section are you most proficient in, and which section do you enjoy teaching the most?
What advice would you give to a student struggling with time?
In the end, find a tutor that fits YOUR needs. A great tutor for someone else may not be compatible.

My advisor was very kind and cared not only about my improvement on the ACT but my development as a person as well. I would strongly recommend Rufaro as a SAT Reading Tutor. He was a former perfect scorer on the SAT. However, my financial advisor was almost always late to our meetings. Even though he would always make up the time after the lesson, I find this quite unprofessional. In the end, I got a 35, so I am quite satisfied.
My Ivy Guru team was very professional and friendly. They wrote personalized homework questions for my improvement. However, I did not reach the score I wanted, which was a 1580. I got a 1530, instead.
After a year of careful independent study, I took the SAT and got a score of 1430. I thought I had maxed out my potential on this test. When I looked at the test statistics at the Ivy League universities I was interested in, none of them had a median SAT score below 1560. I decided to look for a tutor, and I found Ivy Guru. After my initial one hour lesson with Jane, I decided to purchase the 24-hour Ambitious Package. Jane was extremely patient and her explanations were spot on. A month later, I took the SAT and received a perfect score, which I believe was a major factor in my acceptance to Harvard.
I did a lot of research into finding a stellar tutor with reasonable prices. I looked through hundreds of programs at Kaplan, Princeton Review, Manhattan Prep, and tried over ten tutors on Wyzant. None of them clicked with me. After taking the SAT three times already with only a 30 point score improvement, I was exhausted and ready to quit. Then, I found Ivy Guru. After trying a 1-hour lesson with Kevin, I felt so much more confident. He was a former perfect scorer, and his advice was so practical. After 12 hours, I took the SAT for the very last time, scoring a 1520.
I was a firm believer in working with a tutor face to face. That philosophy has served me well for over a decade for outside help on school subjects, but failed miserably for the SAT. I live in Minnesota, and there just aren’t any exceptional SAT tutors in the area. I looked online, and Ivy Guru was the only test prep company offering a free trial lesson. I was wholly impressed by Rob’s depth of understanding for the SAT. As a former question writer for the College Board, Rob was able to actually write questions that targeted my weaknesses for my homework. I was getting personalized official SAT questions.
As a parent, I wanted to find the best SAT tutor for my son at an affordable price. After taking the SAT twice, his highest attempt was a 1310. We first purchased the 3 Hour Starter Package. My son really enjoyed Tony’s casual attitude and humor during his online SAT lessons. Since he was an official exam writer for the SAT, Tony knew exactly what area of knowledge the question was testing for. We soon purchased the 36 Hour Comprehensive Package. After two months, William scored a 1580. That’s a 270 point improvement! A year later, William was selected as a U.S. Presidential Scholar and received a full-ride to Columbia University. We are absolutely thrilled.
They say “results are everything”, and this rang true in my experience with Ivy Guru. My SAT score went up almost 300 points, which has allowed me to competitively apply to my top choice colleges. I was not interested in doing online tutoring until I tried the free 1-hour SAT lesson with Rufaro and knew it would be worth the work. Rufaro used Zoom, a white board, and a workbook so seamlessly that I felt I was sitting with him in-person. Rufaro focused on the exact subject and questions I had trouble with, and made the dreaded SAT even look fun at times.
Everyone at Ivy Guru is very helpful and kind. We are glad we contacted Ivy Guru, they have been very, very useful in this process.
Ivy Guru provided a well-tailored experience that was incredibly flexible in its application to learning.
The best thing about Ivy Guru is the people!! They are all so available and responsive.
As a parent, my interactions with my child’s Ivy Guru strategist were always very warm and informative. They are an incredibly professional and knowledgeable group.
My son’s Ivy Guru team was well organized. He had tutors who were motivating, supportive and very helpful. They were all experienced and knowledgeable and their organization was outrageously good!
Ivy Guru helped my child tremendously. My son’s team was endlessly reliable, and the quality of work ethic was top notch across the entire group.
I simply love my mentors! They help me immensely in my application process, and I know they genuinely care about me (which is something super unique about Ivy Guru's mentors).
I love how everyone is so nice and professional! I remember when I accidentally missed the first meeting because I was going through a rough time, that everyone was so considerate.
All the people in your ‘team’ are really committed to helping you to get exactly what you need as an individual. They are always there to answer my questions and ease my doubts.
The efficiency of my Ivy Guru team and their encouragement to work towards successes and achievements — that in all honesty seemed a bit far fetched beforehand — is invaluable.
I have so many responsible and important instructors and mentors who help me along the way. Everyone of them genuinely cares about me and my success.
All of my Ivy Guru helpers responded to my needs very quickly. The math classes I have with Rufaro are amazing. He helps me to understand the topics very quickly.
Ivy Guru turned my application which had interests all over the place into a cohesive package that had a strong focal point. I realized colleges are not looking for well-rounded students, but to compose an entire class that is well-rounded, with each student having one major strength. For me, that was music. My team helped me craft a touching personal statement around my musical background that I believe was the primary factor to my admissions to Princeton. All of the admissions consultants I worked with were simply amazing writers that could completely transform a bland essay into one that will stay on the top of the pile in the admissions office. Finally, compared to other college consulting services, I believe Ivy Guru has superior service without charging ridiculous rates. I’m glad I found Ivy Guru.
Ivy Guru really helped me hone in on what I needed to write on my personal statement in order to fully express myself to the admission officers. My team knew the entire process from front to back, and a lot of them had been through it themselves. So to have people who understood what I was going through and help me reach my goals was incredible. Also, I cannot stress how vital the IvyGuru Roundtable was. Having a committee of former Directors of Admission at the schools I was applying to was a game changer. It’s as if my application was reviewed twice before they made a decision on whether to admit me.
When I first stumbled upon Ivy Guru, I thought they were exclusive to students applying to the Ivy League. During my first consultation, they helped me craft a balanced group of universities that were in my best interests. It was reassuring to know that my team was not overbearing on me applying to top schools that I was simply not interested in. I really felt listened to. My academic advisor was a Harvard Graduate who is one of the most humble people I have ever known. We grew really close during this process, and I know I’ll always be able to ask her for advice beyond my first day at Duke.
I just got back from Stanford parent’s weekend and wanted you to know that Jackson could not imagine attending another university. I have never seen him so animated and passionate about being in a new environment. The atmosphere, academics, and proximity to Silicon Valley are simply amazing. It feels like this is the right path for him, and we will never take this opportunity for granted. Thank you, Ivy Guru.
Coming into the application process, I was very lost. I knew what I had to do, but I, like many other applicants, was never taught how to write a compelling essay, how to hold your own in a college interview, how to present your extracurricular activities. Truth be told, I was expected to just attend a local state university. It seemed like the cheapest option. However, after my initial consultation, Ivy Guru broadened my perspective and allowed me to realize my potential. I was a lot stronger than I thought I was. My team was entirely dedicated to my success, never cutting corners while advising my application. Never in my wildest dreams would I imagine attending Harvard with a full-ride scholarship.
The college application process was quite daunting to both me and my family in the beginning, as I am the oldest child. Ivy Guru broke down the entire process into manageable pieces that really boosted my confidence in myself. I was surprised by the level of care they put into my application, as I was only a small client, helping me take my personal statement to a level I would never have gotten to myself. I could easily tell that they were all experts who knew the entire process like the back of their hand.
