About David
I have had a passion for performing and writing music since I started taking piano lessons and playing the French horn and trumpet in band over twenty years ago. I hold degrees in music from Rice University, Brigham Young University, and Brigham Young University-Idaho, and I have been teaching music in studio and classroom settings for over eight years. In my studio, you will learn a wide range of topics, from the fundamentals of music and how to play your instrument to developing your artistic voice and playing the music you love with expression and passion.

I began as a tutor and teaching assistant while studying at Brigham Young University-Idaho. As a graduate student at Rice and Brigham Young University, I designed and taught college-level courses in music theory, composition, and aural skills while offering private lessons in French horn and composition on the side. Having recently completed my graduate work and moved to Salem, I am working to establish a studio in French horn, composition, and other related skills.

If the student has some prior experience, I start by asking them to play their favorite piece, to get an idea of their skill level and the kind of music they are interested in. After they play the piece, I offer feedback on their playing technique and show them how to play what they love with even greater sensitivity and expression. Based on their interests and skill level, I would offer suggestions for exercises and repertoire that the student can begin working on to build their technique and musicality.
For a brand-new student with no prior experience, I would start by asking them what music they like to listen to. While it is important to learn standard repertoire, students are most motivated to practice music that they love. I would start with the basics, including breath control, embouchure placement, and tone production, and begin to teach basic fingerings and note names, working toward the goal of being able to play their favorite songs.
I have worked primarily in college-level classroom settings teaching music theory, aural skills, and composition, but I have taught elementary, middle, and high-school-age French horn students and taught private college-level music theory and composition lessons both in-person and online.
Look for a teacher who is confident in his or her playing ability and knows their stuff, and who you enjoy being with and working with. Find someone who will challenge you to be the best musician you can be while making lessons fun and exciting.

Details
French horn, composition, and music theory lessons: $60/hr or $35/half-hour
Trumpet, piano, and voice lessons: $40/hr or $25/half-hour
I teach basic concepts of music theory as part of my instrumental, voice, or composition lessons; however, I also offer lessons/tutoring specifically on music theory and analysis, generally intended for students enrolled in a music degree program or studying for AP Music Theory.
