About Jon
My service stands out because I recognize the individuality and unique interests of each student. We collaborate to find music that they are interested in, and I build a curriculum based on their passions and my expertise.
There are few things more rewarding than a student invested in their own learning. When first starting out, I focus on building rapport with my student. This looks like praise when they successfully execute an assignment, and focused reflection when the assignment is incomplete. I also spend time gauging exactly how many assignments to give, which depends on the amount of time we have together and how driven I sense they are. I'm careful to give only one or two things to focus on at a time - I don't want to overwhelm them with information!
What I love about what I do is working with each student to find their strength and passion, working through the challenges (because there are ALWAYS challenges), and helping them to become the musician they've always wanted to become.
I began teaching in college when the music school secretary, Donna, said a woman called looking for lessons and asked if I would be willing to teach privately. I jumped on the opportunity! In music, if you might be qualified, you ALWAYS take the gig. Little did I know that it would end up being a full time career!

My goal with new students is to have a crystal clear idea of what their goals are. If I can help them achieve their goals, I let them know and we dive into working together!
The first lesson is for me to assess where they are and where they want to go. As mentioned above, I combine my own expertise on the instruments with their goals, and we come up with a unique plan just for them.
I enjoy teaching students of all ages. Some are younger students, in middle school or high school who are seeking lessons for band.
Some are passionate amateurs who want to pick up a new hobby. I recently taught a former US Circuit Judge who wanted to learn flute (91 years old!).
I also teach younger students who just can't wait to get started on an instrument. This is usually in the form of Ukulele or Recorder Lessons.
Consider what your goals are. Be specific. Find a teacher who can help you with those goals.

Perfect! Jonathan lets me set my own pace for learning. He understands my goals and doesn't pressure me to move too quickly, nor does he artificially hold me back when I'm ready to move to a new concept or technique. He communicates extremely well, is flexible when schedules have to alter, and he is excited to learn new things just like I am. When I passed on a recommendation for a technique book with which he wasn't familiar, he perked up and bought it for himself so he and I could both learn from it. I'm excited to keep working with him over the long term.

Jon's love for educating new musicians creates an atmosphere of curiousity and progress. He is an equally skilled musician and educator. It is a pleasure to work with him.
I took private lessons with Jon for almost two years in high school. He was always very knowledgeable and helpful, and was a major factor in my success those years in making All State and other Honor Bands. I only stopped taking lessons when I moved away for college, or else I'd still be taking them now! He was always organized and easy to schedule with. Definitely my best experience with a Private Instructor to date!
Jon has been teaching my son clarinet from the very beginning and it's been great hearing the progress. He is patient and encouraging in his feedback, and is willing to work with whatever level of commitment (i.e. practice) he is given. I think it's largely due to Jon that my son has stayed interested in playing.
Jon was a great teacher for our teenager, helping him improve his reading while still leaving room open for self-expression and improvising with music that he likes. He is himself a really great musician, and a teacher that knows how to meet students where their interests are and help them learn.
Jon is helping me to relearn the clarinet after many (47!) years of not playing. I wish I had half the brain power I did back then. But he's very encouraging. My goal is to play with a concert band just a couple of months from now, so he's customizing my lessons to meet that goal. When I encounter challenges, he's very good at explaining ways to overcome those challenges. I really like working with Jon and feel lucky to have found such a good teacher.
