About Sean
Music is a journey of the heart, and I’ve been guiding people on this path for over forty years. My journey has taken me through the world’s musical traditions - from the American folk roots I grew up with to the vibrant rhythms of African drumming and the soulful melodies of Indian Classical music. These experiences have deepened my appreciation for the rich diversity of cultures and musical styles that shape how I teach and connect with students.
I’ve had the privilege of studying these traditions with great teachers at Dartmouth College, Wesleyan University, and in India. My teacher training at Pacific Oaks College also helped me appreciate each person’s unique musical journey and learning style. This blend of experiences allows me to meet you wherever you are in your musical path.
Whether you want to dive into songwriting, improve your singing, learn guitar or ukulele, or explore music for well-being, I’m here to support you. I believe in your unique musical path and can’t wait to help you explore it.
I began teaching acoustic guitar and voice lessons in 1984, also offering harmonium and tabla lessons a few years later.
I'm grateful for my exposure to the music of different cultures, especially the fascinating polyrhythms of traditional African drumming and the deeply moving melodies of Indian Classical music. I had the good fortune to study these disciplines intensively with Master Teachers during my time at Dartmouth College, at Wesleyan University, and through independent studies in India. My teacher training at Pacific Oaks College further deepened my appreciation of cultural diversity as well as my sensitivity to different learning styles. This experience has enriched my own compositions, as well as my ability to connect with learners from diverse cultural backgrounds, and to help guide people in developing a personal style free from artificial boundaries of genre.

Depending on one's starting level of experience, some basic exercises will be assigned to develop core skills, with increasing levels of technical challenge and complexity. Elements of music theory will be woven into practical lessons. Students will have the choice to incorporate material from popular and familiar music into their studies, and as they progress they will be encouraged to compose original pieces incorporating concepts and skills from the lessons. As music should be enjoyable, I expect students to be highly motivated and to dedicate regular time to practice in between lessons. Of course there is some work involved to get to a point of effortless fluent expression, but you should also be able to have a lot of fun along the way!
I've worked with students of all ages, from 5 to 75, with a wide range of experience levels and all different preferred genres. Some of my students have approached music mainly for personal enjoyment and deepening their self-identity, while others have used the skills they learned in their careers. My goal is to help everyone develop their own personal style and thrive in playing the kind of music that inspires them.
I'm currently working on recording an album of original songs based on the poetry of Rumi, Hafiz and other mystics, which I plan to release later this year.

Details
Half-hour lessons at my Roseburg studio are $30; 45-minute lessons are $40; one-hour lessons are $50. Prepaid packages of 5 or more lessons will receive a 10% discount.
For lessons in your home, I charge a $17 travel fee for up to 10 miles.
