About Matt
Growing up I was a mostly self-taught musician then later received my music degree at Bennington College. Because of those two experiences I understand the drive to learn using songs you love, but also the advantages to formal theory and technique. Over the years since, I've used that approach to teach a variety of students with lots of different tastes the songs they love. Here is a list of some of the musicians whose music students of mine have chosen to learn. Maybe I can teach you something you love and I can add a new musician to my list! I have a degree in composition and piano performance from Bennington College. Since then, I've picked up guitar and played in numerous projects and various settings from classical to pop to folk from rock venues to art galleries to weddings. I've been teaching adults to play guitar using the music they like (not going through full books) since 2010.

I have a first free session where I get to know the person, their personality, musical taste, and experience on the instrument. Then I make a plan for the next week to start working on songs they already know and enjoy, tailored to their skill level.

Guitar lessons with Matt have been awesome! I started off as a beginner, only knowing about 4 basic chords. Matt let me pick songs I liked and wanted to learn. Gradually, I was able to play new chord formations, finger-picking and strum patterns while learning some music theory along the way! Even my musician/singer wife is thrilled that I can finally play well enough for her to sing along without awkward pauses and funny looks! Matt is also a great composer and one of his folk songs is already on my to-learn list. The progress I made in just over a year has been amazing!
