About Emily
I am a highly experienced, educated, and dynamic Latin educator. I focus primarily on Latin as a living language -- my lessons emphasize language acquisition and vocabulary retention rather than the traditional recitations of grammatical forms, which students often find tiresome and which I have found do not lead to fluency.
Not many teachers can do what I do with Latin, and I am proud of that. It brings me great joy to see students come to appreciate the Latin language like I do, and to sate their curiosity to learn more.
I hold my Bachelors in Classics from Bard College, and my Masters in Classics from the University of Georgia. At the University of Georgia, my thesis project was a high school textbook based on the poetry of Ovid's Metamorphoses.

I always start by introducing students to basic spoken Latin phrases, equivalent to your "standard" language basics -- Hello, How are you, What is your name, What is the weather like, Thank you, Goodbye. This introduces students to the basics of Latin pronunciation and word order. Beyond that, my preferred text to work from is Oerberg's Lingua Latina per se Illustrata, though if students have a text they would like to use, I am happy to work with that -- I am familiar with virtually ever Latin instructional course on the consumer market.
I have worked with a wide variety of learners (primarily between grades 6-10), and my best students are passionate about Latin and ancient history. I have discovered that nowadays students often come to Latin due to a personal interest in mythology and military history, often gleaned from video games.

Details
I charge $60 for an hourlong lesson between the hours of 9 AM and 6 PM, Eastern Time. Outside of those times, I charge $70 for an hourlong lesson. I charge a cancellation fee equal to 50% of the lesson if you cancel with less than 24 hours' notice.
