About Heng-i
My name is Vicky Runyan. I was born in Taiwan. I have lived in America for about 4 years. Now I live in Seal Beach, California and I work for YMCA.
Last year I earned my master’s degree at CSULB with a focus on Chinese pedagogy, teaching Chinese as a second language. Then, I worked as a Mandarin teacher at Terra Marin school in San Francisco, California. I also founded an English learning Center in Taiwan for 13 years before I came to California.
I have 10+ years of teaching experience to helping students master Chinese language and culture in Taiwan and 2 years in California.
There are several important elements that I use to motivate my students. First, a good way to motivate students is to teach culture. For example, I provide my students numerous videos and story books based on the cultural context. All of this cultural information has helped my students make progress in their learning of Chinese. I believe that learning language should be based on the cultural context because language cannot be separated from culture. So learning culture can motivate students to learn language.
Second, I also like to supplement lessons with interesting materials based on prior knowledge. For example, I like to use real-life examples and stories about familiar topics, such as current events, (like TV shows, movies, cartoons), and universal interests (like food, love, songs, sports, etc). Doing this makes my curriculum interesting and creative.
Third, I believe one of the best ways to motivate students is to use well-organized curriculum/ (lesson plans). For example, I adjust lesson plan if it is needed based on students’ performance at present. I also apply current language learning methodologies to help my students, such as the audio-lingual method, pitch contour visualization, the communicative approach, and the vocalic-kinesic approach. As a result, students find learning Chinese to be easier, which motivates students even more.
Finally, it is very important to build a good relationship with students. We cannot avoid working with difficult students, and every student can be difficult sometimes. So we must accept our students’ weaknesses at the same time that we appreciate their good qualities in order to create harmony.
I love to work with students because they inspire me every day I get the privilege to work with them. I have a great sense of accomplishment especially when I see their improvement in mastering the language.
I started teaching in Taiwan 20 years ago as a tutor before coming to the United State to complete my master degree with a focus on Chinese pedagogy, teaching Chinese as a second language.
I started teaching Mandarin at CSULB as a teaching assistant in Chinese 101 two years ago.
I have a master’s degree from California State University, Long Beach with a focus on Chinese pedagogy, teaching Chinese as a second language. Also I have completed a training program in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language at the World Chinese Language Association in Taiwan.

I will interview my new student to determine his level of Mandarin proficiency and then discuss what he wants from my help. from that point on I will start to create his own personal lesson plans.
I have taught students from K to adults.
I especially enjoyed celebrating the Chinese Moon Festival and Chinese New Year with my students at Terra Marin School and also with my tutoring students.
