Empowering others. Physical training in martial arts leads to a greater level of self awareness and self mastery through increasing our understanding of ourselves and others physically, psychologically, emotionally and ultimately sociologically. I don't preach morals to students, but the experience of martial arts training promotes personal growth and inner strength in a way that's quite unlike anything else. I enjoy helping others to discover the benefits of training and enriching their lives in a positive way.
I started formal training in Tae Kwon Do in the early '90's and obtained a black belt and teaching certification in that art in 1995 and worked as an instructor and school manager for a couple of years. My journey then took me into cross training in multiple styles and eventually led to another teaching certification under the Unified Fighting Arts Federation. I have also done some substitute teaching for Chuck Norris' Kickstart program while living in Houston, TX.

I teach according to each student's goals. Everyone has different interests and reasons for training and I tailor lessons to meet each student's needs within the scope of fight training. Typically, we set an appointment that fits both of our schedules and meet at my dojo, a student's house, or a convenient and suitable location.
All types and all ages.
As far as my area of expertise is concerned, there aren't any schools anywhere close to this area that teach some of the skills that I teach. That sets me apart from many other instructors. My advice would be to know your goals, but to keep an open mind also. The path to our goals in martial arts training is not always what we expect, but when we dedicate ourselves, the journey in martial arts can be very transformational. As training progresses, a student's interests and passions in training may expand beyond what they originally were. There are no shortcuts to our goals, but each technique we learn empowers us and brings us one step closer to understanding the big picture. As Bruce Lee said, "before I studied the art, a kick was just a kick, a punch was just a punch; after I studied the art, a kick was no longer a kick, a punch no longer a punch; now that I understand the art, a kick is just a kick, a punch is just a punch." I've found that to be very true. I also advise students to never train under an instructor that doesn't reciprocate to you the same respect that he expects from you. Respect is for all. Finally, I would say that I personally have always looked for skills in my instructors, not certificates or belts. At the end of the day, skills speak for themselves. If you were to look at Bruce Lee's martial arts resume as an instructor, it would have said one style, one instructor and no teaching certification, but his skills spoke for themselves.
I currently train in the Inosanto line and in recent years have had the honor of training with Guro Dan Inosanto himself multiple times. I also have the honor and privilege of training with top instructors in that line, most notably world class fighter and martial artist, Sifu Marc Mcfann, whom I respect and admire greatly.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
When we're new to martial arts training, the way we think about fighting is very different from how fighting actually is. A student may sometimes say, "I just want to learn this and I don't want to learn that." I completely understand this way of thinking because I have felt the same way before, but it's important to understand that sometimes this is possible and sometimes it isn't. In building skill, one thing leads to another, and another, etc. We often have to develop skills we don't yet have in order to be able to develop the skills we want. That being said, my approach is still to get to the practical application of techniques as directly as possible without a lot of traditional patterns, etc.

James is the real deal. He knows his stuff. Whether you're looking for no nonsense street defense, competition level coaching, or just want to get in shape and try something new and interesting, his lessons are top notch!
James is an excellent instructor. The lessons are very informative, and easy to follow. As a beginner, I was scared to start at first but now I've been training with James for three years. His knowledge and skill is very broad and in- depth and he is very respectful and patient and I immediately felt very comfortable training with him. He truly believes in what he does.

Details
Lessons are $30 per hour at my location and $50 per hour if I travel. One hour minimum. No binding contract. I'm also willing to trade for goods and services. Training partners train free of charge. Students and training partners are welcome to bring a friend. I offer one free introductory lesson at my location.
